Thousands flock to Lambing Day at Bishop Burton College

Thousands flock to Lambing Day at Bishop Burton College This is Hull and East Riding -- Despite the cold, spring was in the air as around 3,000 people turned out to welcome the season's first lambs today. Families flocked to Bishop Burton College to be part of Lambing Sunday for a special Mother's Day treat. The first new born arrived last week and the births have continued since. More than 1,400 lambs are expected to be born at Bishop Burton College in the next three to four weeks. Lizzie Jennings, head shepherd at the college, was on hand to deliver the lambs on what is her busiest day of the year. She said: "We have a fantastic fertility rate, as scans show that our flock of around 600 sheep are carrying an average of two lambs each, which is the ideal number for a ewe to care for. "You can tell when a ewe is about to lamb as she'll separate herself off from the flock and try to find a quiet spot to 'nest'. "From the moment the first water breaks I'll time the process, but as much as possible we leave them to it, only getting involved if the sheep really needs assistance." The first visitors to the lambing shed at 11am were just in time to witness a rare live birth. Four-year-old Delilah Groves, from Beverley, came to see the lambs for the second year running with her mum Helen Germaine and dad James Groves. Delilah, who named the lamb she was holding Lilly-Rose, said: "It is really nice to hold a lamb, they're so soft." Helen, 39, said it was a perfect way to spend Mother's Day and praised the college for the work it has done to put on the event. "The day is really well run and it is a really special thing to be a part of," she said. "It is something a bit different and a great experience for the children to hold and stroke a lamb." With births set to continue for a number of weeks, staff are working around the clock to tend to the sheep's every needs. Lizzie has six years of lambing experience and has been shepherding on Lambing Sunday at Bishop Burton College for three. "I absolutely love lambing, it's my favourite time of year," she said. "People are always surprised by the physical nature of the birth and it's a wonderful experience for adults and children who don't have the opportunity to be around farm animals, let alone to witness new life come into the world. "It's such a positive experience, however many lambs I see, it's still special when they wobble to their legs for the first time. "It's rewarding for the farm workers and public alike." Isabella Taylor, four, and her sister Emelia, one, travelled from Cleethorpes with their parents Nathan and Melissa Taylor. It was the first time they had held a lamb and soon fell in love with the animal. Nathan said: "It is a chance for the kids to experience something new. They have loved the experience and want to take it home. We will certainly be back again." Although staff monitor the lambs throughout the day, Lizzie said they try to keep the birthing process as natural as possible. "We leave it all down to the mother to give birth when and where she feels comfortable," she said. "We will only step in if there are complications and then we will leave the new borns for a few days before introducing them to other lambs." Staff are now waiting for the weather to improve and for the grass to grow in order to release the lambs into the fields. Reported by This is 2 hours ago.

Sale 21-15 Saracens | LV Cup match report

• Sale 21-15 Saracens

Sale will face Harlequins in the LV Cup final after a 21-15 win over Saracens.

Four Ben Spencer penalties to Danny Cipriani's two gave Saracens a 12-6 advantage midway through the first half before Tom Holmes's unconverted touchdown reduced the deficit to one point at the interval.

Spencer added his fifth three-pointer in the second period but Nathan Fowles went over and Cipriani, after converting, kicked another penalty to send the Sharks into the final.

Despite fielding a virtually full-strength side in the round-robin phase, the Sharks director of rugby, Steve Diamond, decided to rest a number of his first-choice players for the club's Premiership relegation battle.

His Saracens counterpart, Mark McCall, continued his philosophy of giving fringe squad members a chance to impress in the knockout competition. Reported by guardian.co.uk 2 hours ago.

Crewe Alexandra: Nathan Ellington hoping to play his part against Sheffield United

Crewe Alexandra: Nathan Ellington hoping to play his part against Sheffield United This is Staffordshire --

NATHAN Ellington says he is ready to roar again after two months on the sidelines.

The 31-year-old striker could make his Crewe debut against Sheffield United tonight after being on bench duty for the 2-1 victory at Colchester on Saturday.

It will be his first taste of senior football since the last game of a frustrating loan spell at Scunthorpe United in January, just before he left parent club Ipswich by mutual consent.

He has won a deal with the Gresty Road outfit until the end of the season after impressing on trial by scoring in each of his four games as an overage player for the club's under-21s side.

Ellington knows it will be a very different challenge to playing in the Development League if he gets to pull on his boots against one of League One's best defences.

But he reckons he can help topple the Blades after receiving the backing of his new boss Steve Davis.

"It felt great to be part of a squad again," said Ellington, who signed his deal to join the club permanently last week.

"To go away and get a win was the icing on the cake.

"There is nothing better than being a player involved on a match day. You can't replicate that feeling.

"I'm here to play and score as many goals as I can. I've been enjoying myself since I arrived here and I want to be successful for myself and the team.

"I haven't played that much recently, but I still feel I can do well, and the manager feels that too.

"Everything seems to fit with this club and I'm happy to be part of it."

Ellington may be asked to start on the bench again if Max Clayton and Ajay Leitch-Smith are to carry on with their newly reformed strike partnership.

Clayton was arguably Crewe's brightest spark in the win at Colchester, and could get the nod for his first home league start since early last month.

However, Chuks Aneke (knee) returns to the fold seeking to regain one of four attacking slots.

The Alex have no fresh problems on the injury front, with midfielders Brad Inman (ankle) and Mike West (hip) expected to return to training later this week.

It is a chance for Davis to pit his wits against one of his former bosses, Danny Wilson, who was his manager at Barnsley in the 1990s.

Wilson could take his side top of the table by the end of the night if they claim three points and Doncaster Rovers slip up at home against Carlisle United.

Davis said: "He got Barnsley to the Premier League so he knows what it's like to get promoted, and I'm sure that experience will be invaluable for the players.

"He knows what's needed and that experience will rub off on the squad.

"He's a good guy, I enjoyed working under him. He's a passionate winner."

United drew 0-0 at home to MK Dons last time out, but have won five of their last seven games in going 542 minutes without conceding a goal.

Wilson said: "Crewe have done very well this season. Steve's done well there.

"It looks like they're safe having got to that magic 50-point mark they all talk about.

"It may make them relax a bit more, which can work one of two ways. It can make it too relaxed or they could play with a freedom which can make them dangerous.

"Mathias Pogba has had a very good season from that wide position, Byron Moore has done well, they've brought in Ellington ... they've got threats in the team, but we've looked very solid and we have to maintain that." Reported by This is 4 hours ago.

Thompson and Miller face fitness tests

This is Somerset --

Swindon Town aim to keep up the pressure on the top two in League One tonight and dent the hopes of one of their main top six rivals.

Kevin MacDonald's side lie third, two points behind second-placed Sheffield United while tonight's opponents at Griffin Park are two points behind Swindon in sixth.

MacDonald said: "Everybody says there are big games coming up but there are big games for the opposition as well.

"Brentford are a decent side but so are the others in the top eight or nine.

"It's about who can take their chances on the night and who can put a run together to win more games in the last ten."

Swindon will check on the fitness of Nathan Thompson and Tommy Miller, who both sustained injuries in last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Walsall at the County Ground.

Right-back Thompson is struggling with a knee problem while midfielder Miller has a calf injury.

MacDonald added: "Nathan Thompson and Tommy Miller didn't train today from the knocks that they got on Saturday and we're going to look at them again tomorrow before we travel to see if they are available to play.

"We're hopeful. It's only two days after the game. Tommy is a lot better than he was on Saturday after the game, I think he took a kick early on in the game.

"Nathan is a bit better but we'll have to wait and see. I think he got a clash of knees. Hopefully it was just a bash, we'll see what happens."

Brentford boss Uwe Rosler may recall former Town target Bradley Wright-Phillips. Reported by This is 7 hours ago.

Mitsubishi Electric HQ Nearing 2013 Opening in Suwanee Patch Suwanee, GA --

One of the largest building projects recently in Gwinnett is close to opening for business in Suwanee.

The massive Mitsubishi Electric headquarters on Satellite Boulevard near I-85 is rounding into form. It should be fully occupied by mid-April to early May, according to a spokesperson for IDI, the developer.

The facility will house the North American headquarters for the company's HVAC (heating, vacuuming, air conditioning) operations. It also means that Mitsubishi Electric will be vacating its current facility in Suwanee, which is at Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road at Satellite Boulevard.

Groundbreaking for the 550,000 square foot facility in January 2012 was a star-studded event. Attending was Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. Also on the scene were Charlotte Nash, chairman of the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners, and Nick Masino, VP of the Gwinnett Chamber and a former Suwanee mayor.

"There has been so much growth in Gwinnett County that people think there's no opportunity to expand," Deal told Suwanee Patch after the groundbreaking event. "This shows that is not the case at all."

The company has expanded rapidly since moving to Gwinnett 19 years ago, and Masino was lauded by IDI for his efforts at keeping Mitsubishi Electric in Suwanee.

Lindenhurst Faces Bleak School Budget Outlook

Lindenhurst Faces Bleak School Budget Outlook Patch Lindenhurst, NY --

The Lindenhurst School District was already facing budget challenges for the 2013-14 school year - another year of a tax cap, a continued loss in New York State aid and increased contractual costs including salaries, benefits, TRS and ERS.

And then Hurricane Sandy hit on October 29, damaging 1,200 homes and displacing 160 students, which translated into $80,000 in additional, unforeseen transportation costs for the District that won't be reimbursed, according to Superintendent Richard Nathan.

And athough some students are making their way way back into the District's schools as their families struggle to get back into their homes South of Montauk Highway, it's also unclear if and when how many will ultimately be able and/or willing to come back into their homes and the District.

In addition, while the the District has settled with the custodians, that's just one of six bargaining units (TAL/teachers' union, aides, clericals, nurses and administrators) whose contracts still need to be settled.

All of these challenges were recently outlined by Superintendent Richard Nathan at the Community Input Night, and they prompted him to write the following letter outlining the challenges:

"Newsday recently ran a story about Anxiety and Kindness, detailing the slow recovery for Lindenhurst residents after Hurricane Sandy.  More than 1,200 homes were flooded. As a result of the storm, more than 160 Lindenhurst students have been reported as displaced and requiring bussing.

"The Lindenhurst School District is obligated to provide bussing for students who were displaced and have been relocated within a 50-mile radius (as long as they wish to continue to attend Lindenhurst schools).

"The current cost factor for this additional transportation is $80,000 a month! FEMA has indicated they do not fund transportation, nor is New York State reimbursing us. Thus, the District has another unfunded mandate.

"We are in the process of conducting budget hearings and examining ways to streamline expenditures and increase revenues. In the past four years Lindenhurst UFSD has changed transportation guidelines, cut more than 66 teaching positions and eliminated numerous administrative, clerical, custodial and aides positions.

"In 2011-12 we closed an elementary school (E.W. Bower), cut ninth-grade athletic teams and combined some varsity and junior varsity teams. We have also eliminated or reduced many electives in the Middle School and High School.

"The anticipated state aid in 2013-14 is still approximately $3 million less than the 2009-10 state aid. In 2009-10 state aid represented 37 percent of our funding; in 2012-13 state aid is only 32 percent of our funding, with the difference being forced to be made up by our local taxpayers.

"For 2013-14 we're faced with huge, inflated pension costs since the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) requires a district contribution of 16.25 percent of teacher and administrative salaries.

"This translates to an additional $2.8 million as compared with 2012-13. The Employee Retirement System (ERS) requires an additional half million dollar contribution for 2013-14.

"The governor’s proposal to reduce the TRS rate to 12.5 percent with a District commitment to maintain 12.5 percent for as long as 20 or 25 years does not make good financial sense in the long run. We believe we would be gambling with our future.

"In addition, we have been working hard to negotiate with five of our bargaining units that still have unsettled contracts. As a result of the Triborough Amendment to the Taylor Law, we must continue to pay step and lane increments, since we cannot alter the terms and conditions of employment that were in existence prior to the expiration of a contract.

"For our teachers’ unit this involves an additional $1.7 million for step increments and another potential $300,000 for lane changes as a result of teachers completing additional course work.

"Our teachers have the ability to refuse to negotiate and still receive steps, which often amounts to a three percent or more raise. This is especially frustrating and disappointing to our Board of Education, to our administrative negotiators and certainly to the hard-hit Lindenhurst taxpayers.

"In addition, our District is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on professional development and new updated curriculum materials as a result of the new Annual Professional Performance Review and new NYS Core Curriculum Standards - all of this in a community still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

"We implore our governor and our state legislators to support public education as “an engineer for economic growth.”  We want to avoid educational insolvency; i.e., the inability of school districts to provide quality educational programs due to significantly reduced revenues.

"Where do we go next? Do we cut kindergarten to half days? Do we cut athletics, giving our 1,900 athletes no outlet for after school?

"I invite our governor to visit Lindenhurst schools and witness how we’ve done more with less. However, the reality is we can do much more with more. My mantra for our community since the October, 2012 storm has been, 'Stay safe and stay strong.'

"We need the help of our government to provide us with more funding to ensure our students are provided with a quality education and are indeed college- and career-ready. We want to be able to truly remain safe and strong."

A portion appeared recently as a letter to the editor in Newsday, which Nathan read in its entirety at the most recent BOE meeting.

A PDF file has been uploaded here in this article, and can be found on the District's website here and here in the 2013-14 budget information section of the website along with the 2013-14 budget overview, a preliminary draft of the 2013-14 budget and a contact list of legislators for parents and residents.

The process of choosing the next pope is underway in Rome. The 115 cardinals who’ll enter the conclave started the day with a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Following the Mass, the cardinals will move to the Sistine Chapel. That happens at around 11 a.m. Eastern time.

*“Behind closed doors within the Vatican City, cardinals will begin casting their votes later today. This will be the church’s 75th conclave to elect a pope.”*

The cardinals can cast votes up to four times a day until they elect a new pope by two-thirds majority.

New York City’s soda ban would have taken effect today, but a state Supreme Court judge struck it down on Monday.

Judge Milton Tingling dealt New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg what The Wall Street Journal calls “a stinging blow.” Judge Tingling ruled Bloomberg “*exceeded his authority by sidestepping the City Council and placing the issue before the city's Board of Health.” *Bloomberg had appointed all that board’s members.

The ban would only have affected places inspected by the health department. This excludes convenience stores and supermarkets. Bloomberg says he’ll appeal.

A Stanford University study suggests aspirin can lower skin-cancer risk in women. It looked at 60,000 Caucasian women aged between 50 and 79 years — that’s the group most likely to get skin cancer.

*“ … and found those that took aspirin decreased their risk for malignant melanoma by 20 percent. Aspirin use has also been shown to lower the risk for colon cancer and heart disease.”*

Turns out clicking that “like” button on Facebook may reveal more about you than you think. A new study from Cambridge University revealed users’ sexuality, political views, and religion can be accurately predicted by studying their “likes.”

58,000 Facebook users in the United States participated in the study. Researchers used an algorithm to predict male sexuality, race, political preference, and religion with 80 percent accuracy or higher.

But it was rare for Facebookers to “like” pages that explicitly indicated those traits. For example, less than 5 percent of gay users actually “liked” gay marriage on the site. Researchers instead determined their sexual preference by their music and TV show “likes.”

These findings could prove to be useful to advertisers looking to target people online, but they could also pose a threat to users’ privacy.

Finally: hear Bradley Manning in his own voice | Glenn Greenwald

A full audio recording of the whistleblower is released today despite a court prohibition on such recordings

The court-martial proceeding of Bradley Manning has, rather ironically, been shrouded in extreme secrecy, often exceeding even that which prevails at Guantanamo military commissions. This secrecy prompted the Center for Constitutional Rights to commence formal legal action on behalf of several journalists and activists, including myself, to compel greater transparency. One particularly oppressive rule governing the Manning trial has barred not only all video or audio recordings of the proceedings, but also any photographs being taken of Manning or even transcripts made of what is said in court. Combined with the prohibition on all press interviews with him, this extraordinary secrecy regime has meant that, in the two-and-a-half years since his arrest, the world has been prevented, literally, from hearing Manning's voice. That changes today.

The Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), the group I recently helped found and on whose board I sit, has received a full, unedited audio recording of the one-hour statement Manning made in court two weeks ago, and this morning has published that recording in full. In that statement, Manning details at length what he did and, more important, the reasons he chose to do it. I'm personally unaware of who made the recording, but its authenticity has been verified. Last week, the superb independent journalist Alexa O'Brien, who has covered the proceedings from start to finish, created the best transcript she could of Manning's statement, which was published, among other places, in the Guardian. But this audio recording provides the first opportunity to hear Manning, in his own voice, explain his actions; that, presumably, is why whoever recorded Manning's statement risked violating the court-martial rules to do so.

This morning, the FPF has published the full, unedited audio of Manning's statement, along with a statement of why it has done so and some brief analysis. I'm posting below some of the most significant excerpts of Manning's statement; for now, I am posting a link to each excerpt, and will shortly add the files in embeddable form so that anyone can post them. The first excerpt is in the form of a 5-minute video produced by the documentarian and FPF Board Member Laura Poitras, highlighting Manning's explanation of how he reacted when he first saw the video of the Apache helicopter gunning down Reuters journalists in Baghdad and then those who showed up to rescue the wounded, including a van with children in it.

The US government and its military has carefully ensured that people hear about Manning from the government, but do not hear from Manning himself. It is way past time for Manning's voice to be heard:

*Manning on the Apache helicopter video*

In April, 2010, WikiLeaks made major news around the world when it published its "Collateral Murder" video, showing US soldiers in Baghdad gleefully celebrating as they gunned down civilians, including two Reuters journalists, and then showered their rescuers with bullets. Here, in Poitras' video, is Manning, in his own words, explaining his reaction when he first saw that video and the process that led him to leak it to the world:

*Manning on the Iraq and Afghanistan War logs*

In July, 2010, WikiLeaks began published tens of thousands of war logs detailing various episodes in both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Among other things, these documents revealed 15,000 Iraqi civilian deaths than had been uncounted, a US policy expressly barring US troops from investigating human rights abuses by the Iraqi forces they were training, previously unknown civilian deaths in Afghanistan at the hands of Nato, and definitive proof that US government and military officials had knowingly lied to the public about these wars. Here is Manning explaining his reaction when he first saw these documents and why he decided to leak them - at this link, or below:

"During this time a blizzard bombarded the mid-atlantic, and I spent a significant period of time essentially stuck in my aunt's house in Maryland. I began to think about what I knew and the information I still had in my possession. For me, the SigActs represented the on the ground reality of both the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I felt that we were risking so much for people that seemed unwilling to cooperate with us, leading to frustration and anger on both sides. I began to become depressed with the situation that we found ourselves increasingly mired in year after year. The SigActs documented this in great detail and provide a context of what we were seeing on the ground.

"In attempting to conduct counter-terrorism or CT and counter-insurgency COIN operations we became obsessed with capturing and killing human targets on lists and not being suspicious of and avoiding cooperation with our Host Nation partners, and ignoring the second and third order effects of accomplishing short-term goals and missions. I believe that if the general public, especially the American public, had access to the information contained within the CIDNE-I and CIDNE-A tables this could spark a domestic debate on the role of the military and our foreign policy in general as [missed word] as it related to Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I also believed the detailed analysis of the data over a long period of time by different sectors of society might cause society to reevaluate the need or even the desire to even to engage in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations that ignore the complex dynamics of the people living in the effected environment everyday."

*Manning on what caused him to question the Iraq War*

In his chats with the government informant who turned him in, Manning - who had been promised confidentiality by the informant who claimed to be a journalist and a pastor -described what first made him disillusioned about the Iraq war in which he was serving. Specifically, he described how he had discovered that many of the Iraqis whom he was helping to detain were not insurgents at all, but simply critics of the Malaki government. But when Manning alerted his superiors to this fact, he was dismissed away, and realized then that using the formal whistleblowing channels would result in nothing other than his own punishment. Here is Manning elaborating on those events and explaining why this led him to leak to WikiLeaks. Listen here, or below:

"On 27 February 2010, a report was received from a subordinate battalion. The report described an event in which the Federal Police or FP detained 15 individuals for printing anti-Iraqi literature. On 2 March 2010, I received instructions from an S3 section officer in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division Tactical Operation Center or TOC to investigate the matter, and figure out who these quote "bad guys" unquote were and how significant this event was for the Federal Police.

"Over the course of my research I found that none of the individuals had previous ties to anti-Iraqi actions or suspected terrorist militia groups. A few hours later, I received several reports from the scene – from this subordinate battalion. They were accidentally sent to an officer on a different team on the S2 section and she forwarded them to me.

"These photos included picture of the individuals, pallets of unprinted paper and seized copies of the final printed material or the printed document; and a high resolution photo of the printed material itself. I printed up one copy of a high resolution photo – I laminated it for ease of use and transfer. I then walked to the TOC and delivered the laminated copy to our category two interpreter.

"She reviewed the information and about a half and hour later delivered a rough written transcript in English to the S2 section. I read the transcript and followed up with her, asking her for her take on the content. She said it was easy for her to transcribe verbatim, since I blew up the photograph and laminated it. She said the general nature of the document was benign. The document, as I had sensed as well, was merely a scholarly critique of the then current Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

"It detailed corruption within the cabinet of al-Maliki's government and the financial impact of his corruption on the Iraqi people. After discovering this discrepancy between the Federal Police's report and the interpreter's transcript, I forwarded this discovery to the top OIC and the battle NCOIC. The top OIC and the overhearing battle captain informed me that they didn't need or want to know this information anymore. They told me to quote 'drop it' unquote and to just assist them and the Federal Police in finding out, where more of these print shops creating quote "anti-Iraqi literature" unquote.

"I couldn't believe what I heard and I returned to the T-SCIF and complained to the other analysts and my section NCOIC about what happened. Some were sympathetic, but no one wanted to do anything about it.

"I am the type of person who likes to know how things work. And, as an analyst, this means I always want to figure out the truth. Unlike other analysts in my section or other sections within the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, I was not satisfied with just scratching the surface and producing canned or cookie cutter assessments. I wanted to know why something was the way it was, and what we could to correct or mitigate a situation.

"I knew that if I continued to assist the Baghdad Federal Police in identifying the political opponents of Prime Minister al-Maliki, those people would be arrested and in the custody of the Special Unit of the Baghdad Federal Police and very likely tortured and not seen again for a very long time – if ever.

"Instead of assisting the Special Unit of the Baghdad Federal Police, I decided to take the information and expose it to the [WikiLeaks organization], in the hope that before the upcoming 7 March 2010 election, they could generate some immediate press on the issue and prevent this unit of the Federal Police from continuing to crack down in political opponents of al-Maliki.

*Manning on the diplomatic cables*

Here is Manning explaining his first reaction to reading various US diplomatic cables, and what led him to read more and eventually release them. Listen here, or below:

"I read more of the diplomatic cables published on the Department of State Net Centric Diplomacy. With my insatiable curiosity and interest in geopolitics I became fascinated with them. I read not only the cables on Iraq, but also about countries and events that I found interesting.

"The more I read, the more I was fascinated with the way that we dealt with other nations and organizations. I also began to think the documented backdoor deals and seemingly criminal activity that didn't seem characteristic of the de facto leader of the free world

*Manning on the due diligence he did over the cables*

To impugn his conduct, it is often claimed - by people who cannot possibly know this - that Manning failed to assess the diplomatic cables he was releasing and simply handed them over without having any idea what was in them. Here is Manning explaining the detailed process he undertook to determine their contents and ensure that they would not result in serious harm to innocent individuals. Listen here, or below:

Up to this point, during the deployment, I had issues I struggled with and difficulty at work. Of the documents release, the cables were the only one I was not absolutely certain couldn't harm the United States. I conducted research on the cables published on the Net Centric Diplomacy, as well as how Department of State cables worked in general.

"In particular, I wanted to know how each cable was published on SIRPnet via the Net Centric Diplomacy. As part of my open source research, I found a document published by the Department of State on its official website.

"The document provided guidance on caption markings for individual cables and handling instructions for their distribution. I quickly learned the caption markings clearly detailed the sensitivity of the Department of State cables. For example, NODIS or No Distribution was used for messages at the highest sensitivity and were only distributed to the authorized recipients.

"The SIPDIS or SIPRnet distribution caption was applied only to recording of other information messages that were deemed appropriate for a release for a wide number of individuals. According to the Department of State guidance for a cable to have the SIPDIS caption, it could not include other captions that were intended to limit distribution.

"The SIPDIS caption was only for information that could only be shared with anyone with access to SIPRnet. I was aware that thousands of military personel, DoD, Department of State, and other civilian agencies had easy access to the tables. The fact that the SIPDIS caption was only for wide distribution made sense to me, given that the vast majority of the Net Centric Diplomacy Cables were not classified.

"The more I read the cables, the more I came to the conclusion that this was the type of information that should become public. I once read and used a quote on open diplomacy written after the First World War and how the world would be a better place if states would avoid making secret pacts and deals with and against each other.

"I thought these cables were a prime example of a need for a more open diplomacy. Given all of the Department of State cables that I read, the fact that most of the cables were unclassified, and that all the cables have a SIPDIS caption.

"I believe that the public release of these cables would not damage the United States, however, I did believe that the cables might be embarrassing, since they represented very honest opinions and statements behind the backs of other nations and organizations.

*Manning on contacting other media outlets*

Here is Manning describing how he first contacted traditional news outlets about what he found. Listen here, or below:

"At my aunt's house I debated what I should do with the SigActs – in particular whether I should hold on to them – or expose them through a press agency. At this point I decided that it made sense to try to expose the SigAct tables to an American newspaper. I first called my local news paper, The Washington Post, and spoke with a woman saying that she was a reporter. I asked her if the Washington Post would be interested in receiving information that would have enormous value to the American public.

"Although we spoke for about five minutes concerning the general nature of what I possessed, I do not believe she took me seriously. She informed me that the Washington Post would possibly be interested, but that such decisions were made only after seeing the information I was referring to and after consideration by senior editors.

"I then decided to contact [missed word] the most popular newspaper, The New York Times. I called the public editor number on The New York Times website. The phone rang and was answered by a machine. I went through the menu to the section for news tips. I was routed to an answering machine. I left a message stating I had access to information about Iraq and Afghanistan that I believed was very important. However, despite leaving my Skype phone number and personal email address, I never received a reply from The New York Times.

"I also briefly considered dropping into the office for the Political Commentary blog, Politico, however the weather conditions during my leave hampered my efforts to travel. After these failed efforts I had ultimately decided to submit the materials to the WLO. I was not sure if the WLO would actually publish these SigAct tables - or even if they would publish at all. I was concerned that they might not be noticed by the American media. However, based upon what I read about the WLO through my research described above, this seemed to be the best medium for publishing this information to the world within my reach.

Yesterday, former New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller published a column which, while partially praising Manning's leaks, insinuated that the claims Manning made in his in-court statement about his motives and actions may be unreliable because they are not found in the logs of the chats in which he engaged with the government informant. That is factually false. As both Nathan Fuller and Greg Mitchell conclusively documented yesterday, Manning's descriptions match perfectly what he said in those chats when he thought nobody would ever hear what he was saying. That's what makes Manning's statements about his motives and thought process so reliable: they not only are consistent with his actions, but with everything he said when he thought he was speaking in private.

Whatever else is true, Bradley Manning in responsible for the most significant and valuable leaks since Daniel Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers. It is a cause for celebration that the US government's efforts to silence his voice, literally, has now been thwarted. Now, people can and should hear directly from Manning himself and make their own assessment. Whoever made this illicit recording (as well the FPF for publishing it) acted in the best spirit of Manning himself: defying corrupt, unjust and self-protecting government secrecy rules in order to inform the world about vital matters.
