The Olympic legacy: schools sports needs funding not rhetoric

Pupils can't go for gold if the government won't put its money where its mouth is, writes PE teacher *Nathan Walker*

Is the government doing enough to support school sports and promote the Olympic legacy? When reading this question one thing automatically stands out like a sore thumb - the phrase "doing enough". As a trained teacher of physical education and someone who is exceptionally passionate about school sport, I fail to see the government doing anything to support and develop school sports and the Olympic legacy.

2012 was undoubtedly a very successful year for sport in the United Kingdom, filled with many highlights. The triumph of the London Olympics is something I, along with many other British citizens, are very proud of. Astonishingly I have read recently that the government are cutting the funding given to certain sports that didn't achieve medals during the Olympics; this is outrageous. How on earth is a sport supposed to develop its facilities, increase the number and quality of coaches and promote opportunities when its funding is being taken away?

For years the government has been concerned about ensuring children take part in healthy and active lifestyles and ensuring that levels of obesity are minimised, which is great and something I passionately believe in too. However, the government seems to believe it will all be possible while cutting funding for school sports yet again. This will have a massive impact on school sports and the Olympic legacy as more and more children will drop out of participating in curricular and extra-curricular sport and exercise. I personally believe funding should be made available to place physical education specialists within primary schools in a full-time, permanent position, rather than the occasional coach who will take maybe two hours of extra-curricular 'club' per week.

Lord Sebastian Coe has provided a number of youths and adults with inspiration that sport and exercise can provide motivation and enable success. Cutting funding and overlooking sport and physical education within education is an awful mistake. I personally believe Michael Gove has no clear sight or objectives concerning PE and school sport and it is having a negative impact on the children currently in the education system. I would like to see some clear objectives and statements from the government on what it is exactly they are doing. It would certainly make interesting reading.

Nathan Walker is a PE teacher currently working for Randstad Education, a teaching supply agency. He has taught PE in a number of schools in Devon, as well as working at International Summer Schools in Oxford and Hertfordshire.

The Independent Book Publishers Association’s president, Florrie Binford Kichler, will retire June 30, 2013 after 10 years of service to IBPA as a board member, board chair, and the past five years as the organization’s president.

Manhattan Beach, CA (PRWEB) January 28, 2013

The Independent Book Publishers Association’s president, Florrie Binford Kichler, will retire June 30, 2013 after 10 years of service to IBPA as a board member, board chair, and the past five years as the organization’s president.

Florrie stepped in as the president of IBPA upon the passing of IBPA’s long-time leader, Jan Nathan, and has led IBPA through a period of immense growth and change in the publishing industry. During her tenure, IBPA has increased its influence as the largest publishing association in the country and continues to lead, educate, and advocate for the independent publishing community.

“It has been my honor, privilege and joy to serve IBPA and work with the many dedicated board members, staff, and members through the years,” said Florrie. “I will miss them all, but am looking forward to spending more time with my family and friends---and exploring the next phase in my career.”

To more accurately reflect the duties of the top two positions at IBPA, Terry Nathan, a 20-year veteran of IBPA who remains with the organization, will assume the title Chief Operations Officer and Kichler’s replacement will take the title of Executive Director.

“Terry Nathan is one of IBPA’s greatest strengths,” Kichler said. “The continuity and experience he represents will be an enormous asset for the new Executive Director.”

According to Stephen Blake Mettee, chair of IBPA’s board, “Florrie has been our rock of stability during challenging times and will be sorely missed, but her retirement certainly opens a great career opportunity for the right person.

“IBPA represents the segment of the book publishing industry with by far the best growth rates in the industry and the Board would like to leverage the association’s strengths under a new leader with the skills and spirit to take advantage of the unique growth opportunity presented by the current publishing revolution.”

About IBPA
Founded in 1983, the Independent Book Publishers Association is the largest not-for-profit trade organization for publishers in the United States. IBPAs mission is to lead and serve the independent publishing community by providing advocacy, education, and tools for success.

Its long list of assets include: a knowledgeable staff, a robust digital infrastructure, a successful annual publishing conference, the Ben Franklin book awards program, scores of member benefits, strong affiliations within the industry, participation in major industry conferences, and a board of directors filled with experienced industry leaders.

Pygmy elephants found dead in Borneo after 'poisoning'

Malaysian officials say 10 of the endangered animals were found dead near each other over three weeks

Ten endangered Borneo pygmy elephants have been found dead in a Malaysian forest under mysterious circumstances, and wildlife officials say they were probably poisoned.

Carcasses of the baby-faced elephants were found near each other over the past three weeks at the Gunung Rara forest reserve, said Laurentius Ambu, director of the wildlife department in Malaysia's Sabah state on Borneo island.

In one case, officers rescued a three-month-old calf that was trying to wake its dead mother.

Poisoning appeared to be the likely cause, but officials have not determined whether it was intentional, said the Sabah environmental minister Masidi Manjun. Though some elephants have been killed for their tusks on Sabah in past years, there was no sign that these animals had been poached.

"This is a very sad day for conservation and Sabah. The death of these majestic and severely endangered Bornean elephants is a great loss to the state," Masidi said in a statement. "If indeed these poor elephants were maliciously poisoned, I would personally make sure that the culprits would be brought to justice and pay for their crime."

The WWF wildlife group estimates that fewer than 1,500 Borneo pygmy elephants exist. They live mainly in Sabah and grow to about 2.5 metres (8ft) tall, shorter than mainland Asian elephants. Known for their babyish faces, large ears and long tails, pygmy elephants were found to be a distinct subspecies only in 2003, after DNA testing.

Their numbers have stabilised in recent years amid conservation efforts to protect their jungle habitats from being torn down for plantations and development projects.

The elephants found dead this month were believed to be from the same family group and ranged in age from four to 20 years, said Sen Nathan, the wildlife department's senior veterinarian. Seven were female and three were male, he said.

Postmortems showed they suffered severe haemorrhages and ulcers in their gastrointestinal tracts. None had gunshot injuries.

"We highly suspect that it might be some form of acute poisoning from something that they had eaten, but we are still waiting for the laboratory results," Nathan said. Reported by guardian.co.uk 7 hours ago.

Dobama Appoints New Artistic Director Patch Cleveland Heights, OH --

Dobama Theatre in Cleveland Heights has appointed a new artistic director.

Nathan Motta, an associate artistic director at Dobama, will take the place of Artistic Director Joel Hammer beginning Feb. 15.

Motta, a professional freelance director, conductor, and composer/lyricist, was named an associate artistic director at Dobama in 2012, and teaches acting through his program at Dobama, the Dobama Emerging Actors Program. Before his time there, he worked with the Cleveland Play House, Opera Cleveland, Ohio Light Opera, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mercury Opera Rochester (NY), and Civic Light Opera (Pittsburgh).

He holds a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University and Master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music. Motta will be directing Dobama Theatre’s final show of the 2012-13 season, Nicky Silver’s THE LYONS, which opens April 19.

“It’s a great privilege to follow in the footsteps of people like Don Bianchi, Joyce Casey, Ron Newell and Joel Hammer,” Motta said. “Dobama has a long history of producing Cleveland premieres of important new plays. The work that has been done to bring professional productions of these new works to the greater Cleveland community is both exciting and vital to the arts culture in the city. I look forward to continuing this work, to helping to grow Dobama Theatre’s theatre community, and to advance this theatre’s essential mission.”

Motta will be the 54-year-old theatre's fifth artistic director.

"We are delighted to have Nathan Motta step into this role at Dobama Theatre," said Hammer. "It is rare to  find a new Artistic Director with such energy and credentials, as well as a commitment to Dobama’s mission and the greater theater community.”

Laura Anderson, President of Dobama’s Board of Directors, said, “Not only are Nathan’s artistic abilities and leadership skills exemplary, his passion for Dobama is contagious. We are thrilled that Nathan will lead Dobama, its artists and its audiences into this next phase of the theatre’s artistic mission.” Reported by Patch 10 hours ago.

Fourth Grader Wins Mentor Public Schools Spelling Bee Patch Mentor, OH --

The Mentor Public Schools Spelling Bee was won by the youngest kid on the stage.

Fourth grade spelling champion Nathan Rolfes outlasted his fifth through eighth grade counterparts to be named the district champion Tuesday night at Memorial Middle School.

Even Nathan's mother, Karen Rolfes, was surprised by her son's success.

"He did practice a lot but you don't expect your fourth grader to win," she said. "There's a lot of smart kids up there."

When asked about his reaction to winning, Nathan said he was "astonished and happy."

The competition first winnowed away the eighth grade champion Eamon Bracken, seventh grade champion Devon Messner and sixth grade champion Nicole Jares. They fell to "squalid,""statistician" and "covetous," respectively.

Nathan and fifth grade spelling champion Diya Chakraborti -- both of Bellflower Elementary -- went head to head for five rounds.

Nathan finally pulled ahead after Diya stumbled on "succumb" and he spelled "monumental" and "caravan" for the win.

Districtwide champion Nathan will now compete in the Lake County spelling bee, whose winner will compete against the Geauga and Ashtabula county champs in the Tri-County Bee.

Last year's Mentor Schools champion Vishnu Nistala made it all the way to the National Bee in Washington D.C. and finished 22nd in the nation. Reported by Patch 1 day ago.

Watch: Mentor Firefighter Nathan Peters Teaches How To Do Hands-Only CPR Patch Mentor, OH --

As part of its Keep The Beat program, Mentor Fire Department taught more than 3,600 people how to do hands-free CPR next year.

But that's not enough.

"We want every citizen in Mentor to learn how to do hands-only CPR," said Mentor Fire Public Information Officer Nathan Peters said.

"If a person goes down, we want a line of people ready to do CPR."

Hands-free CPR is a proven way to save lives. If a person receives CPR immediately after having a heart attack, their chance of survival increases from five percent to as much as 20 percent, Peters said.

If you would like to learn how to do hands-only CPR or you'd like to schedule a free class for your business, church group or family, call the Mentor Fire Department at 440-974-5769. Reported by Patch 9 hours ago.

Tunbridge Wells boss Martin Larkin delighted with form

Tunbridge Wells boss Martin Larkin delighted with form This is Kent --

TUNBRIDGE Wells boss Martin Larkin has not given up hope of his team mounting a title challenge this season.

Wells rose to sixth with their win at Fisher on Monday evening, courtesy of goals from Andy Irvine and Carl Cornell.

They still trail leaders Erith & Belvedere by 11 points, but are in great form at the moment, only losing one of their last 11 games in all competitions.

"It's another important three points," Larkin said. "We're 11 points off the top with half a season to go and we've still got to play Erith & Belvedere. We were asked last night 'can we win it?' That gap is quite big, but we'll keep going until the medals are handed out."

The only thing surprising about Monday evening is that Wells didn't score more than two goals. And it wasn't that they lacked chances.

Andy Irvine put them ahead early on, capitalising on their pressing game and nicking the ball from a back pass and slotting it away.

The visitors then missed a glut of chances. Andy McMath saw a screamer rattle the bar, Carl Cornell hit a post, while Jon Pilbeam missed two great opportunities.

"With the half chances we had they should have been dead and buried by half-time," Larkin said. "In the second half we scored one, but we should have had four or five. We just weren't clinical enough. But the back four were superb and Perry Spackman was sensational."

Irvine had a goal ruled out for offside, before Cornell put Wells 2-0 up on 69 minutes. Tom Davey whipped in a corner that Spackman flicked on to Cornell, who headed in at the far post. It was great movement from the striker.

Wells continued to press, but it was the hosts who had the final say, netting a fine, late consolation through Nathan Bell. Reported by This is 17 hours ago.

Patch Analysis: Thurmond Could Save DeKalb BOE's Jobs

Patch Analysis: Thurmond Could Save DeKalb BOE's Jobs Patch Brookhaven, GA --

Michael Thurmond may be just the man to save the jobs of DeKalb's embattled school board.

Whether that's a good thing, remains to be seen.

Thurmond was appointed DeKalb's interim school superintendent Friday afternoon, after the board of education narrowly approved a severance package for former superintendent Cheryl Atkinson. Rumors had been circulating since last week that Atkinson was on her way out.

DeKalb's school system is currently under probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The board is set to appear before the Georgia Department of Education (GDOE) on Feb. 21 to brief state officials on its progress in meeting SACS recommendations to keep the school system accredited.

The GDOE is then expected to decide whether or not it will recommend that DeKalb's school board be replaced. Gov. Nathan Deal has the power to remove any elected school board that fails to meet accreditation standards, if the GDOE recommends that action.

Thurmond's appointment may be just the thing to forestall such a move.

Thurmond, along with former Attorney General Thurbert Baker, was the last Democrat to hold statewide office. In 2010, both men left their positions to seek higher office - Thurmond, to run against U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, and Baker, to run for governor. Both men lost.

But Thurmond served three terms as labor commissioner, and overall received high marks from Republicans and Democrats. Prior to becoming labor commissioner, he was a state legislator from Athens from 1987-92. He then  headed up Georgia's Department of Family & Children Services.

DeKalb's school board approved Thurmond on Friday by a vote of 7-2. They may be hoping that Thurmond's network of contacts in the state's legislative and executive branches - Thurmond has served in both - will forestall any move by the GDOE to replace them.

What remains to be seen is how much influence Thurmond himself still possesses. Republicans have solid majorities in both the House and Senate. When Thurmond and Baker departed, Republicans won their seats. Today, no Democrat holds any statewide office.

Also, Thurmond and current DeKalb board of education chairman Eugene Walker go back to 1992, when they both ran unsuccessfully for Congress. If Thurmond allows himself to be seen as Walker's handpicked leader whose job is to simply save the DeKalb school board, Gov. Deal won't think twice about replacing them if the GDOE recommends it.

DeKalb County's political influence looks to be in serious decline. Its school system is under probation. The home and office of its CEO were just raided by law enforcement authorities as part of an investigation into the county's watershed operations. One neighborhood - Brookhaven - just formed its own city, and another - the Lakeside community - is looking into the possibility of doing the same thing.

Now, Thurmond takes over a system that is racially and geographically divided. He told the AJC on Friday that he took the job because he wanted a challenge.

He's got one.

Nathan Ellington keen to resurrect his career with spell at Crewe Alexandra

Nathan Ellington keen to resurrect his career with spell at Crewe Alexandra This is Staffordshire -- CREWE are running the rule over free agent Nathan Ellington as Steve Davis stresses he will never stop looking for a chance to improve his squad. Striker Ellington cancelled his contract with Ipswich by mutual consent last month after becoming frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities. The 31-year-old is now training with the Alex at Reaseheath as both parties weigh up what the future holds. Manager Davis said: "Nathan lives in Manchester and he's coming down to work with us to get himself fit and going. "He's a free agent, so we will have a look at that situation. He's played a the top level and he's been a thorn in many defences' sides. "If we can improve the team we will do it. A lot of players don't peak until their 30s, I was playing my best football at 32. "We've not promised him anything, just get in the place to train and we will see how it goes." Ellington emerged from non-league circles to make his breakthrough at Bristol Rovers over three years from 1999 before moving to Wigan Athletic. The prolific scorer moved on to West Bromwich Albion in 2005, Watford in 2007 and joined Ipswich in 2011, although he only made three starts at Portman Road. A loan spell at Scunthorpe earlier this season was disrupted by injuries and illness, but he says he is now ready for a new chapter in his career. "Maybe I need to drop down a division so I can start playing regularly and remind people of my qualities," he told the East Anglian Daily Times. "I'm always helping the younger players and they're always appreciative of it. "They always say it's good to train with me so they can get that extra bit of advice as well. Having a player with my experience at a club does benefit others." Davis has allowed rookie defenders Andy White and Paris Bateman to join Nantwich Town on loan, but he is unlikely to let any of his other youngsters go out on similar deals. Crewe's development squad have two games next week, at home to Derby County on Monday (1pm) and Coventry City on Friday (also 1pm) and all players are required. It is a different story at Notts County, where caretaker manager Chris Kiwomya is expected to be busy in the loan market over the next couple of weeks. The Magpies yesterday swooped for Manchester United striker John Cofie on loan and he is set to be involved this afternoon. A fall from fifth to 10th cost previous boss Keith Curle his job and Davis says he cannot be sure what to expect from Crewe's opponents this afternoon. He said: "We are looking forward to it. Keith was sacked last weekend so obviously there's been a bit of disruption and they've asked Chris Kiwomya to take over. "You can get one or two things in that situation. Either a team can be disorganised or the players can really respond to the new man. "They went to Stevenage on Tuesday, which is always a hard place to go anyway, and came back with nothing, but it will be different in front of their home crowd, determined to put things right and get up and running again. "We will go there prepared to battle and full of confidence after a good result at Coventry." Reported by This is 12 hours ago.

Stanford to Build Contemplative Center Patch Palo Alto, CA --

Stanford University will break ground after Commencement on a new center for contemplation and reflection adjacent to the Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden at the corner of Santa Teresa Street and Lomita Mall.

The one-story, 4,000-square-foot Windhover Contemplative Center has been on the university's construction agenda for about 15 years. The estimated $5.3 million project received design approval from the Board of Trustees in October and site approval in April. The center is on the consent calendar for project approval at the Feb. 11-12 meeting of the Board of Trustees. It will be submitted for final approval in June. The building is tentatively scheduled to be completed in spring 2014.

The new center will be located on what is now a parking lot in front of Roble Hall. It will include three rooms featuring four large paintings by the late Stanford art Professor Nathan Oliveira. Outside landscaping will feature a reflection pool and garden areas for meditation. The building will be enclosed in glass, allowing for viewing of the Oliveira paintings even from outside. Benches and cushions will be strategically placed in the three main rooms to allow visitors to quietly view the paintings.

"This center is related to our well-being initiatives," Greg Boardman, vice provost for student affairs, recently said during a departmental meeting. "It is a place to go and take a break from an intense day and be fulfilled."

Boardman is a member of a steering committee that has been planning the center for the past year and a half. He said committee members have been wrestling with such issues as security and access, given the value of the Oliveira works. All are part of his Windhover series, which were inspired by birds in flight. Boardman said the committee decided to make the center accessible only with a Stanford ID. It will be open to faculty, staff and students. At this point, the hours are envisioned as 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Swansea City beat Queens Park Rangers

This is South Wales --

SWANSEA City completed a high-scoring double over Queens Park Rangers by winning 4-1 at the Liberty Stadium.

That followed a 5-0 rout at Loftus Road on the Opening day of the season.

Michu weighed in with a brace, while Angel Rangel and Pablo Hernandez were also on target.

Michael Laudrup's side took the lead after only eight minutes when Nathan Dyer's shot was spilled by Julio Cesar and Michu's mi**** follow up looped into the net.

Rangel doubled that advantage six minutes later, finishing at the second attempt after being expertly found by Wayne Routledge.

QPR pulled a goal back early in the second period as substitute Bobby Zamora netted when Michel Vorm failed to hold Adel Taarabt's shot.

But any thoughts of a fightback were quickly killed.

Just three minutes later Pablo Hernandez showed excellent footwork before squeezing the ball in at the far post.

Michu rounded off the victory in the 67th minute, latching onto Hernandez's inch-perfect  through ball before poking past Cesar. Reported by This is 9 hours ago.

Swansea City 4-1 Queens Park Rangers | Premier League match report

Swansea City head off to Dubai today for some warm weather training, leaving behind another job well done. In contrast, QPR are heading for the Championship after a comprehensive defeat which saw them undermined by the fumbling hands of Julio Cesar.

The Brazilian goalkeeper let two shots escape his grasp in the first 18 minutes, and the Swans punished him on both occasions. Bobby Zamora, on as substitute, did pull one back early in the second half, but Swansea quickly hit back to score again.

Swansea recalled Michel Vorm in goal, but were without the influential Leon Britton in midfield. QPR omitted both wingers, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Park Ji-Sung, and principal striker Zamora, seeking defensive security in a packed midfield – much good did it do them.

Swansea were ahead after eight minutes, when Cesar failed to hold Nathan Dyer's shot from the edge of the penalty area and Michu forced the ball in at close range for his first goal in seven games.

Five minutes later he was back for more. Played in by Chico Flores's long through pass, his shot from 12 yards demanded a decent save by Cesar.

The second goal was not long in coming. Wayne Routledge supplied Angel Rangel, who cut inside Jamie Mackie before letting fly. Again Cesar saved the initial shot but allowed the ball to get away from him, allowing the full-back to make sure with his second attempt.

Flores was carried off on a stretcher after 33 minutes, with suspected ligament damage to his right ankle.

QPR were briefly back in contention three minutes into the second half, when Vorm palmed Adel Taarabt's shot from the right straight to Zamora, leaving him with a tap-in.

Two minutes later, however, Pablo Hernández with one of the goals of the season. Supplied out on the left by Michu, he cut inside two defenders before beating Cesar with a left-to-right shot from a near impossible angle on the byline.

Midway through the second half Michu added his 18th of the season, holding off Chris Samba before scoring with a sublime finish from near the penalty spot, one Spaniard's cool expertise doing full justice to a lovely through pass from another, Hernández.

Wright-Phillips struck the crossbar in stoppage time at the end, but it was far too little, much too late. Reported by guardian.co.uk 9 hours ago.
