Village Honors Lynbrook Titans Wrestlers Patch Malverne-West Hempstead-Lynbrook, NY --

In recognition of their recent successes this year, members of the Lynbrook Titans wrestling team were honored with proclamations from the Lynbrook Board of Trustees on Monday night at village hall.

In total, 30 student athletes from the Titans — a youth program of the Lynbrook Youth Athletic Association — were honored by village officials.

Mayor William Hendrick presented athletes with proclamations for their dedication and commitment to the sport of wrestling and for competing in tournaments.

"These young men here tonight, they've competed at very high levels," said Trustee Hilary Becker, who is also president of the Lynbrook Youth Athletic Association and a coach of the youth wrestling program. "They did a great job."

A total of 21 athletes from the Lynbrook Titans' Tournament Wrestling Team were honored at the event, including: Hugh Bittenbender, Jaylin Walker, Liam Fitzgerald, Ally Fitzgerald, Andrew Cancel, Douglas Stern, Daniel Delvalle, James Luongo, Nathan Stewart, John Dibenedetto, James Gillespie, John Bertolini, Justin Baeyens, Michael Covo and Vincent McGuire. Students Christian Meszaros, Alex Cooper, Lucas Pecora, Liam O'Neil, Jake D'Agostino and Caleb Alvarez were not in attendance.

Three Lynbrook Junior High School wrestlers — Zachary Kornberg, Matt Renz and Joe Becker — were also honored by village officials. Kornberg placed second at the New York State Junior High School Wrestling Tournament, Renz placed third at the same tournament, and Becker won a gold medal in a recent Huntington wrestling tournament.

Two coaches, Fred Shwom and Kevin Murphy, were recognized for their dedication to the association and working as mentors with students to help them progress as athletes.

"They resemble what it is to be a volunteer, they give so much to the community," said Becker, who described Shwom as a "great asset" and Murphy as an "outstanding coach, wrestler and person."

Rich Renz, a coach for Lynbrook Titans Wrestling, presented award certificates to six Lynbrook varsity wrestling seniors, including Matt Mott, Charlie Curcio, Jason Espinosa, Nick Mascia and Jon Lollar. Mathew Swanson was not at the event. Renz described all of the men as hard-working, determined athletes who possess strong work ethics, and always work to do their best.

Of the group, Mott not only placed second at all-county, but also qualified to compete at the New York State Tournament.

"Wrestling is a tough sport, the toughest in the world," he said. "You have to put the time in. People would ask how we were doing. It was real good for the program and for the community. This has been a real good year for us." Reported by Patch 5 hours ago.

Hot Docs 2013 opens with Canadian strip club tale The Manor A documentary by a Guelph strip club manager-turned filmmaker about his family’s life in the peeler business and the truth behind the tassels will open the 20th edition of Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival, on April 25.

Shawney Cohen’s The Manor kicks off the festival, which will screen 205 documentaries from 43 countries in 11 screening programs from April 25 to May 5 at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema and other venues.

The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival announced its full film lineup at a media conference Tuesday morning.

Hot Docs has also announced a new program that will showcase filmmakers and their subjects in conversation onstage after screenings. Among those featured in the Scotiabank Big Ideas series is law professor Anita Hill, appearing with Anita director Freida Mock; evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss, both outspoken authors and subjects of The Unbelievers; and retired Lt. Gen. Roméo Dallaire, who appears in Fight Like Soldiers, Die Like Children.

Among the other films announced for the Hot Docs roster are Malcolm Ingram’s Continental, about the storied New York City gay bathhouse; Lucy Walker’s thrilling Sundance hit The Crash Reel, about snowboarder Kevin Pearce; Penny Lane’s presidential exploration Our Nixon; and Raoul Peck’s Fatal Assistance, about the ways in which billions of dollars donated to Haiti were lost or stolen due to corruption and mismanagement.

Homegrown movies competing in the Canadian Spectrum program include Michelle Latimer’s Alias, a look at the lives and music of five street rappers in Toronto, and Charles Wilkinson’s Oil Sands Karaoke, about how amateur songbirds working in boomtown Fort McMurray, Alta., blow off steam and ease loneliness.

There are films about dirt-bike gangs (Lotfy Nathan’s 12 O’Clock Boys), female Shaolin Kung Fu warriors in training (Inigo Westmeier’s Dragon Girls), Lapland reindeer herders (Jessica Oreck’s Aatsinki: The Story of Arctic Cowboys) and an 81-year-old jewel thief who has no interest in repenting (Matthew Pond and Kirk Marcolina’s The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne).

These films join 28 Special Presentation titles already announced March 6.

Hot Docs will also present a pair of retrospective programs: Focus on Peter Mettler, and the Outstanding Achievement Award Retrospective, honouring filmmaker Les Blank.

More than 2,000 industry delegates will be shopping for films looking for buyers at Hot Docs, along with attending industry events, conferences, forums and of course, parties.

*May 4 - Live from Mannheim, Germany*
*WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP*
*WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO vs. FRANCESCO PIANETA*

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Live world championship boxing continues its EPIX run in April and May with two more exciting events featuring the kings of the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions.

Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) light heavyweight champion *NATHAN CLEVERLY* defends his title against No. 1 contender *ROBIN KRASNIQI* on *Saturday, April 20*, at London's Wembley Arena. The following month, World Heavyweight Champion *WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO*, making his fourth consecutive appearance on EPIX, defends his WBO/International Boxing Federation (IBF)/World Boxing Association (WBA)/International Boxing Organization (IBO)/The Ring world titles against undefeated Top-10 contender *FRANCESCO PIANETA* on *Saturday, May 4,* at the SAP-Arena in Mannheim, Germany. Both fights will be televised live to the U.S. exclusively on *EPIX,* the premium entertainment network. *EPIX* will stream the fights live on *EpixHD.com and on the EPIX app on Xbox consoles and Roku players* as part of a special free trial offer for boxing fans.

These four gladiators boast a combined record of 151-5-1 (92 KOs) -- a winning percentage of 96% and a victory by knockout ratio of 61%.

"We're excited to present another strong slate of compelling world championship battles," said Travis Pomposello, Chief Creative Officer for EPIX Sports. "The Cleverly-Krasniqi and Klitschko-Pianeta title rumbles are competitive fights with marquee value that our viewers want to see and have come to expect from EPIX."

Cleverly (25-0, 12 KOs), of Caerphilly, Wales, was British Commonwealth and European light heavyweight champion before he ascended the throne as world champion. After winning the WBO interim light heavyweight title in 2010, winning a close but unanimous decision over Nadjib Mohammedi, he was elevated to world champion a few months later where he has since successfully defended the WBO title four times since 2011 against opponents who had a combined record of 81-6-2 when he battled them. In Cleverly's last fight, which took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles on November 11, he blasted out Shawn Hawk in the eighth round.

Krasniqi (39-2, 15 KOs), a native of Serbia who fights out of Munich, Germany, is riding a seven-year, 38-bout winning streak. Only once has Krasniqi ever fought outside Germany -- in Prague, Czech Republic in 2010. He enters this fight having won his last four fights by knockout. Those victories also earned him the WBO European and WBO International light heavyweight crowns as well and his WBO mandatory challenger position.

Klitschko (59-3, 50 KOs), of Kiev, Ukraine, is a two-time world heavyweight champion. Klitschko began his first title reign in 2000 when he captured the WBO heavyweight title via a unanimous decision over defending champion Chris Byrd. Byrd suffered two knockdowns in that battle. Klitschko's two-year title reign included five successful defenses - all by knockout - before losing the belt to Corrie Sanders in 2003. Klitschko returned to the world championship throne in 2006, this time as IBF champion, when he dethroned Chris Byrd in a title rematch. This victory was even more emphatic than the first one with Klitschko stopping Byrd in the seventh round. Since that fight, Klitschko has taken on and defeated all comers while unifying the title with victories over WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov, and WBA champion David Haye. He enters this fight riding a nine-year, 16-bout winning streak. Last year he successfully defended his titles three times -- a fourth-round knockout of former two-time world champion Jean Marc Mormeck on March 3, and a sixth-round stoppage of mandatory challenger Tony Thompson on July 7. He finished the year with a 12-round unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Mariusz Wach on November 10. All three title defenses were televised live to the U.S. by EPIX.

Pianeta (28-0-1, 15 KOs), is a native of Italy who fights out of Gelsenkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. An eight-year professional, Pianeta, 28, is an inspiring story having survived a bout of testicular cancer. After surgery in late 2009, the 6'5 southpaw returned to the ring one year later, knocking out Mike Middleton in the first round. His resume boasts a one-year reign as the European Union heavyweight champion, which included three successful title defenses, and victories over former heavyweight champion Oliver McCall and four-time heavyweight title challenger Frans Botha. In his last fight on November 16, Pianeta knocked out Nelson Dario Dominguez (14-1-1) in the first round. He is currently world-rated No. 8 by the WBO.

Yeovil Town 0-2 Swindon Town: Penalty sets Robins on their way

Yeovil Town 0-2 Swindon Town: Penalty sets Robins on their way This is Somerset -- Yeovil Town favourite Marek Stech went from hero to villain by gifting Swindon Town a soft penalty that set them on their way to a dismal defeat against their promotion rivals. On an evening where the uneven Huish Park pitch played a bigger role than it should, the keeper's reckless barge on Gary Roberts gave the visitors an unnecessary advantage. Once behind, Gary Johnson's Glovers shows few signs of getting at least a leveller after struggling to create a clear chance throughout the game. Victory for Swindon took them to third in npower League One, whilst Yeovil looked nervously over their shoulders at the teams chasing the top six. Gavin Williams started ahead of Ben Gordon on the left wing, with Johnson revealing Sam Foley would not have beaten the Welshman to the starting XI even if he had passed a late fitness test on his hip. However, less than a minute had elapsed before Gavin Williams entered referee Keith Stroud's book for a late challenge on Nathan Thompson. Former Glover Andy Williams was presented with a chance to break the deadlock after two minutes but fired at Marek Stech when Ed Upson was dispossessed on Yeovil's right and the cross found its way to the other side of the box. Jamie McCallister's fourth minute clipped right-footed pass found Joe Edwards in space but the bounce of the ball was unkind and his shot looped over the bar. On eight minutes Alan McCormack's long ball released Adam Rooney who beat Dan Burn for pace but not strength and his shot was weak. James Hayter superb knock launched a Yeovil counter on 17 minutes, finding Paddy Madden. The Irishman cut infield and his shot from the edge of the box deflected into Wes Foderingham's arms. The Glovers attacked immediately again, Madden this time squaring for Hayter who somehow controlled with his head but volleyed high and wide. As the pitch cut up and neither side found rhythm, the half became one of few chances. On 43 minutes a Swindon free kick from Kevin Dawson's foul dropped in the Yeovil area, Darren Ward reacted quickest but his shot ricocheted off target. McAllister lasted four second half minutes, limping off to be replaced by Ben Gordon just moments after picking up his tenth booking of the season for flailing an arm at Andy Williams. Gary Roberts shoulder-barged Dawson off the ball on 55 minutes and rifled home but the 'goal' was disallowed for the foul. On 62 minutes Stech did well to turn away Adam Rooney's flick from Roberts' cross and Simon Ferry's follow-up was blocked. The stopper punched clear a 65th minute free kick and Alan McCormack could not get over the ball with his subsequent volley. At the other end, Madden was given was a sight of goal but was denied by a superb last-ditch Thompson block. After 75 minutes substitute James Collins turned and shot, Stech parried and Luke Ayling was on hand to hook clear. However, the Czech Republic gloveman changed the course of the game on 77 minutes, blocking and clattering Roberts as he challenged for possession in the box. Adam Rooney confidently dispatched the following penalty, beating Stech's dive. On 79 minutes when Yeovil were unable to clear their lines and Stech spilled Adam Rooney's first time effort before falling on the rebound. Collins rounded off another disappointing night for the Glovers by breaking free seconds before the final whistle and drilling beyond Stech. *MATCH STATS* Yeovil Town (4-4-2) - Stech; Ayling, Webster, Burn, McAllister (Gordon, 49); Dawson (Young, 79), Upson, Edwards, G. Edwards is proud of Blues despite defeat This is Essex --

BATTLING Billericay slipped to a narrow defeat to Blue Square Bet South leaders Welling to stay in the relegation places.

The home side had the better of the game at a wet New Lodge, but were undone by Fraser Franks' first half header and a late deflected effort from Ross Lafayette.

Sub Nathan Ashton pulled one back but the Blues were unable to force a leveller – although manager Craig Edwards was proud of his side's efforts.

"They're the best side in the league and on the day we were the better side," he said. "As we found last year when we won the Ryman Premier, often the ball will run for you.

"Their second goal was totally fluky really but you get that when you're top of the league. That's why they're top, because they win games like this one.

"I was really pleased with the comeback from Tuesday, the reaction of the boys, we worked hard in training on Thursday and I can't criticise one of my players."

Billericay made a bright start and Welling keeper Sam Mott was twice called into action, first to deny Junior Luke and then Alex Osborn.

At the other end Sam Beasant was tested when Wings player-boss Jamie Day curled a free-kick towards the bottom corner, but the keeper turned it round the post.

But on 16 minutes the deadlock was broken, Jake Gallagher swinging in an excellent corner from the right which Franks headed past Beasant.

Billericay came close to a leveller after a good move when Dave Collis flicked the ball back to skipper Glenn Poole, but he rifled his volleyed effort just over the top.

The home side came close in the second half when Collis' cross was cleared out to May on the edge of the box, but his well-struck effort was the wrong side of the upright.

But they were almost stung on the break when Jake Reid collected the ball in the box and skipped around Beasant, but Chris Wild got back to block his shot.

The home side went close on 70 minutes when Collis played a deep free-kick into the box to May, but his header went narrowly past the near post.

It was nearly two when a rare Welling attack saw a cross find its way to Ross Lafayette but he headed wide. However, five minutes from time the same man claimed the decisive second.

Beasant made a great save from the initial effort and Wild then cleared off the line, but it fell to Lafayette whose shot was deflected off Paul Rodgers past the helpless Beasant.

That prompted a double change from Edwards and it paid instant dividends as with his first touch Ashton collected the ball and drilled it low into the bottom corner.

The result leaves the Blues in the bottom three, but Edwards added: "They gave everything they've got, we've got a quarter of the season to go, we've got 11 games, we're not panicking and if we can put performances in like that then we'll be fine."

Billericay: Beasant, Rodgers, Douglas, Collis, Beckles, Wild, Luke (Ashton 85), Poole, May, Osborn (Smith 76), Lechmere (Taylor 85). Subs: Semakula, Stone Reported by This is 14 hours ago.

Tenth Anniversary of the Iraq War: The North Shore Reflects

Tenth Anniversary of the Iraq War: The North Shore Reflects Patch Hamilton-Wenham, MA --

Ten years ago today U.S. forces led the invasion of Iraq.

President Barack Obama took the troops out of Iraq a year ago, leaving the country "teetering between progress and chaos," according to a Washington Post overview. But whatever the outcomes of the war in Iraq itself, the conflict certainly had its effects here on the North Shore.

Those consequences can be seen most clearly in the young men and women from North Shore towns who fought in Iraq — and died there.

Two Swampscott High graduates, Army Specialist Jared Raymond and Marine Capt. Jennifer Harris, both lost their lives in the war. Wakefield's Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Bellavia also died in Iraq. Army Sgt. Benjamin Mejia, of Salem, is among the North Shore casualties of the conflict.

Aside from those who lost their lives in Iraq, many more people served their country and returned home to the North Shore. Count among them Nathan Gray of Lynn, an Iraq war veteran recently profiled in the Item for the landscaping business he started. And Patch covered joyous events, too, like the Thanksgiving visit home to Swampscott of Navy pilot James Morrison, who flew missions in Iraq.

But the U.S. has an all-volunteer military, leaving the vast majority of families without a loved one in harm's way. Even for these families, the Iraq War is certainly an historic event.

*How did the war affect you and your family? What impact did it have on your town? Share your thoughts with other North Shore residents in the comments below.* Reported by Patch 7 hours ago.

Dedham Recreation Elementary Wrestling Program Concludes Successful Season Patch Dedham, MA --

The Dedham Recreation Elementary Wrestling program concluded its eleventh successful season on Monday, March 11th.

Forty eight wrestlers worked hard for eight weeks learning takedowns, breakdowns and pinning combinations. Our wrestlers are separated by grade level, where they mastered the single and double leg takedowns.  On the mat, they learned how to breakdown their opponent to pin his shoulders to the mat for a quick victory. The best part of practice and the real reason they come, is the killer games of King of the Ring, Bull Rush, Kings and Scorpion.

The program would like to thank all of their volunteer coaches, who helped keep the “Little Bulldogs” focused on having fun while learning a new sport.  This year’s volunteer wrestling coaches were Mike Maher, Andrew Maher, Michael Maher, Wayne Sayers, Steve Jordan, Allan Sussman, Matt & Jason Sulinski, Jared Hunt, Matt & John Cahoon and Jim Maher.

Next year, they will welcome all the new 5th graders to the Sectional Championship Recreation Middle School Team. The following wrestlers were part of the 2013 “Little Bulldog” Recreation Wrestling Team.

The Trouble With Tina Fey's New Movie

$

What should be a hilarious, long-overdue pairing of two hugely likable, superstar comedians ends up being a major disappointment with "Admission."

As much film and television work as they do individually, Tina Fey and Paul Rudd surprisingly never have worked together. In theory, her smart, zingy persona should mesh beautifully with his easygoing goofiness – or their shared dynamic should bounce, or snap, or have some sort of life to it. Instead, Paul Weitz's direction of Karen Croner's script is tonally erratic: too fast in spots and too much of a slog in others.

It certainly doesn't help that the characters, based on Jean Hanff Korelitz's novel, feel like types without much nuance. Even reliable comic veterans like Fey and Rudd can't find much that's new or fresh in these people, and as a result they have zero chemistry with each other. That's shocking, I realize.

Fey, as a Princeton University admissions officer, is always uptight, precise and emotionally closed-off. Rudd, as the do-gooder founder of an alternative New England high school, is always free-spirited, adventurous and open-minded. Even in the fantasy world of romantic comedies where opposites attract and sparks fly, these two have no business being together; they never change each other, and that's supposed to be the source of comedy.

(Note: Spoiler alert in next paragraph.)

You may actually find yourself hoping that they'll stay apart. (Spoiler alert! They don't.) Nonetheless, they end up falling for each other in the unlikeliest of scenarios.

Fey's Portia Nathan has been analyzing and rejecting prospective Princetonians for 16 years now, and as evidenced by her tidy office and the verbatim speech she gives when visiting the nation's top high schools, she has it down to a science. Ironically, though, she hates children – babies, to be specific – and shares a quiet, safe life with her condescending English professor boyfriend (Michael Sheen, stuck in a one-note, one-joke role).

When the dean of admissions (Wallace Shawn) announces he's retiring, Portia finds that she and a rival colleague (Gloria Reuben) are the top candidates to replace him. To distinguish herself, Portia agrees to visit the crunchy-granola New Quest school at the urging of its creator, Rudd's John Pressman, who happens to have been a classmate of hers at Dartmouth.

Turns out, John has a particular student in mind for Portia to meet: the slightly odd but obviously brilliant Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), whom John believes is the child Portia gave up for adoption back when they were in college. (The fact that he remembers so many details from this period so vividly and that he'd track her down to act on them is creepy, but whatever.) And Jeremiah just happens to want to go to Princeton.

At the same time, Portia's longtime boyfriend unceremoniously walks out on her for another woman (in the kind of scene that only happens in the movies) so now she's free to be with John, who ... isn't exactly right for her, either.

"Admission" awkwardly grasps for serious feelings within all these wacky deceptions and manipulations and forces heavy, third-act emotions on us that it hasn't earned. Some of the few moments of heft come courtesy of a radiant Lily Tomlin as Portia's mother, a maverick feminist and intellectual who has forged her own notion of what it means to be both a woman and a parent, and urges her daughter to do the same. Merely the idea of Tomlin playing Fey's mom is exciting, but watching these two strong, groundbreaking comedians share the screen is one of the film's few real joys.

And seeing the college application process behind the scenes – the lobbying, the favors, the weeding-out – is actually kinda fascinating if this is indeed how it all goes down. Given the cynicism that exists in that conference room over those long days of deliberation, as well as some of the more questionable practices that occur, it's sort of amazing that an actual school would lend its actual name to the film, much a place of Ivy League prestige.

So maybe there were some surprises here after all.

"Admission," a Focus Features release, is rated PG-13 for language and some sexual material. Running time: 100 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

Motion Picture Association of America rating definition for PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. Reported by Huffington Post 10 hours ago.

Bill Would Lower Georgia's 'Drunk Boater' Legal Limit

Bill Would Lower Georgia's 'Drunk Boater' Legal Limit Patch Roswell, GA --

A Georgia bill drafted in response to recent boating fatalities on Lake Lanier would lower the state's BUI limit to that of the limit for motorists. Other boating safety changes also would become law.

Senate Bill 136 specifically has some acts titled the "Jake and Griffin Prince BUI Law" and the "Kile Glover Boat Education Law."

The bill passed the state Senate on March 1 by a 50-0 vote and now is in the House. The 2013 legislative session ends March 22.

The bill would lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for boat operators to 0.08 grams, the same as that for motorists. Gov. Nathan Deal called for such a move last June.

Also, it would require that Georgia boaters meet training requirements and
wear life jackets at an extended age, according to a Lake Lanier news release.

*-- How do you feel about these proposed changes? What else might need to be done about safety on Lake Lanier? Share your thoughts in the comments below.*

According to the news release, Sen. Renee Untermann, R-Buford, one of the bill's sponsors, told the Augusta Chronicle: “I know that Senate Bill 136 is a statewide bill, but in particular Lake Lanier, because of the urbanization of the area and the encroachment in direct relationship with Atlanta, we have an overpopulation, especially on holidays. Unfortunately, we’ve had several instances of boating accidents and boating drownings.”

Last June, brothers Griffin and Jake Prince of Buford were killed when a boat slammed into the pontoon boat that was carrying them and others. Griffin Prince's body was found after a nine-day search.

Paul Bennett of Cumming has been indicted in connection with the Prince deaths. He faces a May trial date on homicide and boating under the influence charges.

Last July, Roswell youth Kile Glover died from injuries he sustained when a personal watercraft operator struck him and another youth on the lake. The youths were in an inner tube being pulled by a larger boat.

Jeffrey Hubbard, described as a family friend, has been indicted in connection with the Glover death. Kile Glover was the former stepson of entertainer Usher Raymond.

The complete Senate Bill 136 is here. Reported by Patch 10 hours ago.

Expectations are low as New Zealand face England at unsuitable Eden Park | Mike Selvey

Unless there is a suitable response from the Auckland public, this ground may well be witnessing its last Test match

This will be the first Test match played at Eden Park in the seven years since West Indies were beaten there and the ground was handed over for rebuilding and the Rugby World Cup (RWC). Unless there is a suitable response from the Auckland public it may well be witnessing its last Test.

The decision of New Zealand Cricket to stage Test matches has been a triumph of planning: both University Oval in Dunedin and the Basin Reserve in Wellington had special atmospheres, the grounds full to their limited capacity. But Eden Park is an edifice, a stadium rather than a cricket ground, with a capacity of 50,000. Half this number turned up for England's T20 match last month, and fewer still for the one-day international (ODI) that followed.

The feeling is that this is a last-ditch effort to see if staging Tests in New Zealand's biggest city is a viable proposition, certainly until there is a purpose-built cricket ground, but expectations are low: the spectators will rattle around; the ground will echo.

Realistically, Eden Park, which has staged 47 matches since its first in 1930, has been unsuited for Tests with the sort of quirkiness that only cricket can provide: a rectangular rugby ground with a pitch angled from corner to corner creates some interesting boundaries. Even that though has changed since the RWC. The pitch orientation is now along what would be the halfway line, so that the premium hospitality boxes are behind the arm.

And it is this that makes it even less suitable, for as was seen during the T20 and ODI, the straight boundaries are not just short but ludicrously so with defensive pushes producing sixes, 23 of them in the T20 match.

ICC Test-match playing conditions state the straight boundaries should be a minimum of 70 yards from the centre of the pitch, with those at Eden Park falling well short of that. There is, though, a get-out clause which states that any ground that has been approved for international cricket prior to October 2007, or one under construction, which does not conform, shall be exempt. So Eden Park is deemed suitable despite the alterations to the layout.

This might just have an impact on team selection on both sides. In Wellington, Bruce Martin bowled his left-arm spin extremely well, took four wickets and deserved better. For England, Monty Panesar got through 54 overs for 91 runs and with the pitch starting to turn would have been expected to add to his single wicket if the weather had not interfered. It may be that the nature of the pitch, together with the boundary size, forces England to have a rethink of their general policy of playing three seamers and a spinner, reluctant as they would be to go into the match without the spin option.

This may be something they consider whatever the nature of the pitch as long as it does not look as if it will crumble. The tendency of drop-in pitches is not to deteriorate but to get better as the game progresses. England's only previous experience of a drop-in Test pitch in New Zealand was in the famous Christchurch match in 2002 in which it was so damp at the start that they lost two wickets in the first over. But the game produced two centuries and two double centuries, the second of which, by Nathan Astle, remains the fastest-ever scored in a Test.

That pitch had only been inserted into the Jade Stadium four days before the match because the Crusaders had a rugby match the previous weekend. It will not have escaped notice that the Warriors rugby league team also had a match at Eden Park last Saturday, and so the Test pitch will likewise have only been put in place towards the finish of the weekend. In Christchurch, when technology was newer, the fear was that moving a shallow metal tray which could warp a fraction might fracture the pitch were it dry. Advancements in the machinery means this is less of a problem now but it would still be a surprise if it didn't retain moisture.

Whether there is grass on it is another matter. If New Zealand really do have a desire to win the series, rather than see 0-0 as a good result, then they might have asked for something seamer-friendly and took their chance. The feeling is that this is unlikely to happen. However, if the two limited-overs matches are any yardstick, there should be considerably more pace and bounce than in the first two Tests.

In Steven Finn England should have a trump card, although he looked out of sorts in Wellington. The lift he got here earlier troubled New Zealand and a return to form for him – and Stuart Broad's continuing enjoyment of it – may be as important as Jimmy Anderson's swing.

Should England require a fourth paceman it would be more likely to be Chris Woakes than Graham Onions. Reported by guardian.co.uk 9 hours ago.

On 10th Anniversary of Iraq War, Smithtown Remembers Nathan B. Bruckenthal Patch Smithtown, NY --

The 2003 invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week, and although the war is officially over, the toll it took on the area endures.

In honor of the anniversary, Patch remembers Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal, a Smithtown native who died in the line of duty on April 24, 2004, in an attack by suicide bombers on the Persian Gulf pumping station he was stationed at. Bruckenthal was 24 years old, and was the first casualty in the U.S. Coast Guard since the Vietnam War. According to published reports, Bruckenthal also lived in Hawaii, Connecticut and Virginia, and his father was a police chief in Northport.

By one count, the Iraq war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

*CNN has a stunning map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.*

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 191 New Yorkers.

If you would like to honor any memories you may have of Bruckenthal, or thank him or his family for their sacrifice, please do so in the comment stream below. Reported by Patch 6 hours ago.
