Patch Mendham-Chester, NJ --

Five candidates interviewed Monday nightext for the Chester Consolidated School District's vacant Board of Education seat, and in the end, the board selected Dr. Nathan Treff to fill the vacant seat.

"The Board considered five very qualified and interested applicants. After carefully considering each candidate’s answers to the Board’s questions, as well as their statements of interest and their resumes, the Board ultimately selected Nathan Treff," Board President Kerri Wright said. "We are eager to work with Nathan and are excited at the unique perspectives he will bring with him to the Board."

Treff joins the new blood brought in at the reorganization meeting at the beginning of the yearext, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Laura Fishman at the end of December.

Fishman's term on the board does not expire until the reorganizational meeting following the 2013 November election and Treff will now be serving out that term.

"At the next meeting, which is Feb. 11, we would swear in the new person," board secretary Mary Jane Canose said. "They would take the oath of office, do some paperwork and start that day."

Treff has an 8-year-old, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old in the district and said during his interview that his work as a scientist could play a big role in his participation with the board in terms of analyzing data and the research of existing data.

Treff said desire to join the board stems from his love of Chester.

"I have three young children; I'm interested in becoming involved in the community," Treff said. "It's one of the reasons I chose to live here—the school system. There's an openness that everyone has and all the support that everyone gives each other." Reported by Patch 5 days ago.
