TV chef hails 'inspirational' new college forum This is Cornwall --

Catering hopefuls prepared canapes for some of Cornwall's top chefs at the launch of a scheme aiming to bridge the gap between education and industry.

Antony Worrall Thompson was among the professionals at Cornwall College Camborne yesterday for the launch of the Cornwall Chef's Forum.

The forum, which has been successfully trialled elsewhere in the South West, will facilitate the sharing of knowledge between professional kitchens and catering colleges.

The students, who were all part of Academy Nathan Outlaw at the college, got a chance to learn how the forum would work after preparing food for the visitors.

Mr Worrall Thompson said events like it were "amazingly important" for students.

He said: "When you think about Cornwall, a lot of employment here is in the service industry and tourism. You've got a magnificent farming industry down here, so there's great local produce.

"Youngsters need encouraging to stay in our industry and it's a very hard industry, there's no doubt about it. I think it gets harder and harder to attract youngsters, so if you've got some top chefs getting involved with colleges like this, it does a lot to inspire them."

Stuart Mathieson, head of hospitality at the college, said: "We supply a large number of students into the industry from across the corporation, so it's important that we are in contact with employers, so if there are any issues they can be dealt with simply. It's also a much healthier opportunity for us to be involved, for chefs to come in and work with us, to see what we do and to break down that barrier between education and industry." Celebrate Earth Day in Woodbury This Weekend (Sponsored) Patch Chappaqua-Mount Kisco, NY --

The 19th annual Woodbury Earth Day will take place at Hollow Park in Woodbury, CT from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013.

Woodbury has gathered great vendors from many different areas of interest for this year's event, which promises to be even better than the last.

"Last year was an absolute grand slam," said Woodbury First Selectman Jerry Stomski. "It gave us an opportunity to look at, how do we make it better? I mean, it's hard to make it better than a grand slam, but we've opened it up and expanded it.

With all the hype this year,  "We moved it from the Hollow Parking lot to the Hollow Fields to give it much more expanse, so we're really excited about this. We think that this is absolutely turning it into our premier event here in town."

This event has grown quickly from its early beginnings in the New Morning Market parking lot to a much larger event with more than 120 vendors and 6,700 visitors last year.  It has approximately the same amount of vendors this year and is expected to receive at least that many visitors.

This marks the second year in Hollow Park, and the event will again be brought to you by the Woodbury Business and Economic Development Committee (WBEDC), and sponsored in part by New Morning Market.

*MUSIC:* With nine different musical acts, you are sure to find a favorite. The music ranges from aboriginal Louisiana funk to Japanese, bluegrass, Celtic, gospel, country, folk, and drum beats. See the complete list of musicians below.

"The entertainment is really top notch and is going to be better than ever, with live music," said John Pittari, committee member and owner of New Morning Market. "And we have really good food this year."

*FOOD: *Your palate will be in for a treat with the wide selection of natural, organic and eco-friendly foods. Try some kettle korn made from non-GMO Nebraskan corn, or pick up some delicious preserves. If cheese is your fancy, there will be grilled cheese sandwiches and other dairy delights.

Got a sweet tooth? Try wood-fired maple syrup, fat-free and dairy-free Italian ice, or "the best ice cream in the Northwest corner of Connecticut." Have some mouth- watering chocolate truffles and award-winning baked goodies that are gluten-free and allergy-friendly.

And for something spicy, try Dragon’s Blood Elixir hot sauce, made with locally grown apples and habanero peppers.

The Community Services Council of Woodbury (also known as the Food Pantry) will be accepting donations of any nonperishable foods at this year’s celebration. Please bring what you can.

*BODY & MIND:* Pamper your body with chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture treatments and massage therapy. Learn about tools for self-healing through tui na acupressure. Pick up some handmade soaps, body care items or products made with honey.

Are you athletic? There will be kayak demonstrations, and Connecticut Outdoors, LLC will offer several different lines of kayaks, canoes, and paddle sport accessories. Learn about social responsibility and taking care of the earth at the Waterbury YMCA tent. Plan a nature walk such as a river walk or a weed walk.

"It is kind of like a scavenger hunt that will be led by an herbalist that knows about edible plants that will go and look at the plants that are growing in the hollow and along the river and talk about the plants that are edible, and plants that are medicinal and such," said Pittari.

*GARDEN/FARMING:* Do you garden or farm? Learn about the development of local sustainable agriculture, and ecologically sound farming and gardening. Pick up some plants for a garden or learn about tree pruning.

*PETS: *Don't forget the doggies! There are grain-free dog treats made with the best local and/or organic ingredients. Find out more about animal rescue groups and animal control at the event.

*ARTISIANS & HOME:* View and purchase beautiful custom jewelry pieces designed by a silversmith or goldsmith. Pick up some whimsical felted wool garments, organic shirts, and browse collections of handmade, ethically sourced, renewable, recycled jewelry.

*GREEN LIVING: *You can learn about water systems, watersheds and a pathway to affordable clean energy.

*SCHOOLS/GROUPS:* Talk to individuals from a local Montessori school, or learn out about a place that uses horses and ponies to help people with special needs.

*HEALTHY WOODBURY:* "This event coincides with the Woodbury town initiative called 'Healthy Woodbury,' which provides opportunities for families to spend time together without spending money," Stomski said. "Families are spending so much time having to be away from home, working to pay their bills, there's not a lot of time to spend with their families, so one of the things we are doing is a free movie night."

The Woodbury businesses are only about 150 yards away from Hollow Park, Stomski said, so families will be able to go into town easily from the Earth Day event, to see even more great products and services in the area.

*RECYCLE: *"The committee has done a great job in organizing this event," said Pittari. "Last year, to my horror, the recycling bins that we were supposed to get never materialized, so this year we have recycling bins that are sponsored by Springer Sanitation. It's going to be paper, plastic, glass and metal that can all go into one container, and there will be plenty of them. There will be 15 recycling bins throughout the park."

*HISTORY:* Pittari stated, "The park is a great place. The park has not only a very interesting natural history of the geology of it forming—because it truly is a hollow, it goes down in all directions to get to the park—but it also has very significant human history. It's where the first Europeans settled and the first nation's people and they summered in the area because the river was very productive with chad and herring and salmon, and so, it really is very fitting to have in our modern era people coming together to share and learn about living a more sustainable life."

*ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:* "In regards to the town's position on this, when we look at economic development in our town, we are certainly aware of what our attributes are, Stomski said. "And when I came into office, those are one of the things we were going to market and advertise: our parks, our history and culture. So this actually works very nicely in promoting the town of Woodbury. In fact, after the events of Earth Day last year, the week after, there were actually five people that contacted our office that had never been to Woodbury before, and liked Woodbury so much that they were inquiring about opening a business here and three of the five did so."

"This is one of many events we host," Stomski said. "We host Summer Fest, in which we had a concert with the cast of Beatlemania and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. The Earth Day event brought in $400,000 revenue to the town last year. Those were people coming in attending the event, going to restaurants, shops and antiques stores."

The Woodbury Earth Day event has free admission, and activities for all ages.  All proceeds go to charity.

You won't want to miss this year's event. It promises to be one of the best Woodbury Earth Days ever!

Swifts see cup dreams come to an end at the Ricoh Arena This is Tamworth --

BOLEHALL 0 ALVIS 2

BOLEHALL Swifts suffered cup final heartbreak as they succumbed to ten-man Alvis at the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday night, writes Matt Panter.

In an incident-packed final, Swifts looked in a strong position at the end of the first half with Alvis having had Tom Maguire sent off.

But a second half header from Christian Jordan gave Alvis the advantage.

And a stunning second from Steve Evans ensured it was the Coventry-based side who lifted the silverware.

Both sides contributed to an entertaining opening to the final, with the action end-to-end.

Alvis started positively and striker Leon Kelly went close before Jordan fired wide.

But Bolehall responded well with Matty Ball firing wide.

Alvis keeper Karl Roach then had to make a tremendous one handed save to keep out a superb Conor Fulford shot which bounced on the goal-line.

Bolehall were now settling into the glamorous surroundings and Jamie Abbott fired in a powerful effort which rammed into the side-netting.

Alvis then won a penalty on 20 minutes after Tom Starkey was deemed to have committed a shove in the penalty area.

Former Sheffield United and Coventry City striker Patrick Suffo stepped up but saw his tame penalty saved by Tom McNulty.

Bolehall responded and a neat lay-off from Ball found Abbott but his shot was deflected to safety.

The game then turned in Bolehall's favour on 25 minutes as Maguire was shown a straight red card for a clash with Danny Hales.

Swifts almost made them pay immediately but Ball was unlucky as Nathan Thompson's low and inviting cross just evaded him.

Roach then did well to react quickly as Abbott threatened inside the penalty area.

The ten men of Alvis were nearly in front on the half hour mark, though, as Suffo connected with a wonderful free-kick from Evans only to be denied by the woodwork.

The ball bounced back to Kelly but his acrobatic effort went just over the Bolehall cross-bar.

Daren Fulford's men went close just before half time too as Nick Heath whipped in a fine ball from the right and Danny Hales was unlucky to send his header just wide.

There was still an opportunity in stoppage time for Alvis to go ahead as Luke O'Kane saw his drive blocked by McNulty and Kelly couldn't convert the follow-up.

Swifts started the second half well and with intent and, two minutes in, midfielder Abbott fired narrowly wide from a corner.

However, they found themselves behind as Alvis countered and O'Kane sent over a deep cross for Jordan to head past McNulty.

The Coventry side doubled their advantage in stunning fashion on 53 minutes as Evans beat McNulty with a looping strike from 25 yards.

Swifts boss Fulford acted by bringing on Troy Wallen and Tez Carpenter for Ball and Alex Pollard.

The changes almost worked immediately as Carpenter found space but sent his cross to close to Roach.

The shell-shocked Swifts looked for a response and Abbott fired a free-kick just wide from distance.

Nathan Thompson then tested Roach with a low drive as Bolehall started to show more enterprise and urgency.

The lively Carpenter was the next to test Roach before Fulford brought on Colby McAdams in place of Abbott.

Swifts huffed and puffed as they looked for a way back into the game and McAdams went close with a well struck free-kick before Alvis brought on Rob Whailen for Jordan.

Swifts then missed a glorious chance to get back in the game with five minutes left as Hales headed over the bar from close range.

Fulford Junior's goal-bound power drive hit Thompson and Hales sent another header just over the bar to sum up a frustrating night for Bolehall.

Bolehall: McNulty, Heath, Getliff, Starkey, Holyland, Hales, Abbott (McAdams 70), Fulford, Thompson, Pollard (Wallen 58), Ball (Carpenter 58). Subs: Lynch, McQuade

Alvis: Roach, Jones, Tagba, McGuire, Taylor, Thompson, O'Kane (Kimberlin 71), Evans, Kelly (Smickle 89), Suffo, Jordan (Whalley 85). Subs: Harris, Cooke. Reported by This is 2 days ago.

Dear parents: If you received a text from your son or daughter that sounded like they accidentally messaged you about drugs, it was likely the work of comedian Nathan Fielder.

Fielder, the star and co-creator of the excellent Comedy Central show "Nathan For You," sent out a tweet to over 30,000 people instructing them to prank their parents by pretending to send a text that appeared to be a drug deal.

Experiment: text your parents "got 2 grams for $40" then right after "Sorry ignore that txt. Not for you" Then tweet pic of their response.

— nathan fielder (@nathanfielder) April 24, 2013

The comedian gave credit to Michael Koman, the co-creator of "Nathan For You," for helping him devise the gag.

"Nathan For You," which just finished its first season, features Fielder going to (real) small businesses and devising ways to help them optimize brand awareness, so this type of practical joke is not uncharacteristic for Fielder. He also caused a minor media stir for making a staged video of a pig rescuing a drowning goat, which went viral before Fielder admitted that he made the video as a test of the gullibility of the media.

As the retweets from his followers suggest, this Twitter prank indeed scared plenty of his followers' parents into thinking their child was getting wrapped up in drugs. Check out the slideshow below to see some livid reactions to the tweet. Reported by Huffington Post 1 day ago.

SPY IN THE CAMP: Swindon Town are a much duller club without the Paulo Di Canio media circus

This is Scunthorpe -- With a top six finish secured, are Swindon Town heading for a return to the Championship? If they are, *CRAIG KENDALL*, a Robins fan exiled in Grimsby, reveals why it will happen under a much smaller media microscope than might have been the case six months previously. *A change of owners, transfer embargoes, managerial upheaval and a place in the play-offs confirmed last weekend. What's been the overriding emotion of Swindon Town fans in 2012/13?* The season started so well. We had one of our most successful managers in recent years, had just won League Two and everyone was buzzing. After brilliant performances against teams in higher divisions in the cup (notably a 4-3 win at Stoke City), we were on the crest of a wave. It was a brilliant time to be a Swindon supporter. Yes, some fans did have reservations about Paulo Di Canio – even after last season's triumph – but I certainly thought he was a major asset to the club. Paolo left the club when we were in second spot in the league. Since then we've had change of owners (which wasn't exactly a smooth transition), a transfer embargo (which took so many weeks to clear it was unbelievable) and a new permanent manager. The new owners seem to be saying 'give us time' but as football fans, we want results straight away. I am a bit more realistic, but a return of only 17 points from 12 matches isn't good enough for a club who were on the brink of automatic promotion success. *A top six finish doesn't seem a bad effort on the back of promotion last season. How does it compare with fans' expectations last summer? * I expected us to finish in the top half of the table, consolidate our position in the league and then push on next season for a play-off/automatic position spot. If someone had said we would finish inside the play-offs this season I would have been more than happy and so, I'm sure, would most fans. The problem is Paolo Di Canio brought so much expectation that our finishing position feels a little disappointing. *Who'll go up via the play-offs? * I have to say Swindon don't I?! Yeovil are a team we have beaten twice this season already, so playing them would be advantageous. But in a league that has been very tight at times anyone could sneak it. If I was a betting man (neutral perspective) then my money would be on Sheffield United for some reason. Even though they have recently lost Danny Wilson I believe they have a strong squad and could certainly rise to the occasion. *Should it happen, how geared up are the Robins for a return to the Championship? * The back end of this season has not been good for Swindon. We have had so many injuries to key players and at times haven't even managed to fill our substitutes' bench. We've had to call upon some of the youth team to try to get through some of the tougher periods. Since the transfer embargo has been lifted we have brought in three players on loan from Spurs – Nathan Byrne, Massimo Luongo and Dean Parrett. All three have brought in fresh energy to the club and have certainly fitted well into the squad, though Parrett has since returned. *The media circus surrounding the County Ground has disappeared since Paolo Di Canio's exit. Are they a better or poorer team though following his departure? * I did enjoy the media circus around Swindon when Paolo was in charge. It was exciting to hear his pre and post-match interviews and his antics on the sidelines were comical at times. Since his departure, and the arrival of Kevin MacDonald, the circus has left town and as a result, things have become very flat. Gone are the days of our manager running up to the fans celebrating, smacking the dugout at a misplaced pass or hauling our keeper off after 25 minutes due to a poor performance. I do miss Paolo – and everything he brought to the club – but we as fans are in this for the long haul and will never give up on Swindon. *Kevin MacDonald seemed a surprise appointment to replace Di Canio. How has he done so far? * I'd not even heard of Kevin MacDonald until his appointment. I honestly believed as soon as the new owners had sorted the takeover, we would see Di Canio back. It does seem strange MacDonald has never been a full-time manager before and wants to try it out. In a way, we are a bit like guinea pigs. Since taking charge he's moved Alan McCormack into midfield and seems to like to play more defensive, with less free-flowing football. Only time will tell if it's going to be a successful formula, but in the short term it's not been that well received by fans. *Where will Saturday's game be won or lost? * In midfield. Our back four have been pretty solid over the past couple of weeks and we have, in my opinion, one of the best goalkeepers outside of the Premier League in Wes Foderingham. Up front though it's been a different story, with our best striker, James Collins, only managing to bag 14 league goals this campaign. We are, without doubt, missing a prolific striker and, dare I say it, Matt Ritchie, who we sold to Bournemouth in January (supposedly behind Paolo's back, one of the reasons why he resigned). Ritchie was a catalyst to our attacking play, providing goals from midfield and some of the best crosses in the Football League. Reported by This is 1 hour ago.

London Broncos 21-14 St Helens | Super League match report

London Broncos 21-14 St Helens

Michael Robertson and Tommy Lee scored second-half tries as London Broncos earned a first home win over St Helens since 2002 with a 21-14 victory at the Stoop. The win, the Broncos' first home victory this season, ended a run of 13 straight victories in the capital for Saints.

London rang the changes ahead of kick-off, with Warrington loanee James Mendeika making a first start at centre and Dan Sarginson and Olsi Krasniqi returning to the starting line-up. St Helens, smarting from their Challenge Cup exit last weekend, gave a debut to Luke Thompson, with Nathan Ashe slotting in at stand-off and Adam Swift replacing the suspended Francis Meli.

The visitors were also missing the injured Mark Flanagan, as well as the banned pair Jon Wilkin and Ade Gardner, both forced to sit out the contest after offences in the defeat at Hull KR.

The Londoners made the running early on, forcing Saints on to the back foot thanks to the drive of the captain Craig Gower. But the Broncos were unable to convert that pressure into points, finding the St Helens defence a tough nut to crack.

Having withstood those assaults, the visitors showed how it should be done with the opening score on 17 minutes, Anthony Laffranchi powering over from close range after the hosts had knocked on close to their own line. And within minutes the Saints had struck again, Swift squeezing in at the corner after an Ashe kick had ricocheted kindly for Nathan Brown's men. Swift suffered a leg injury in the act of scoring though, forcing him out of the action. But London were far from out of the contest, and hit back with their first try on 25 minutes, Chris Bailey crashing over after a short pass from Gower.

It was proving an even contest all round, with the action ebbing and flowing. Luke Dorn thought that he had brought London level when he skidded over minutes before the break, only to be adjudged as knocking on. Then Stuart Howarth went close for Saints, burrowing for the line but coming up just short on the final tackle. In the final action of the half the visitors threatened again, only for Iosia Soliola to be stopped in his tracks by a great hit from Bailey.

The Broncos were probably unfortunate to be behind at the break, but put that right seconds after the restart, Robertson taking a looping pass from Dorn to canter in at the corner. The hosts had their tails up and stretched further clear on 48 minutes, Lee touching down after Sarginson had intercepted and raced clear.

St Helens huffed and puffed after that, but were getting precious little change out of the London defence, despite the best efforts of Ashe and Paul Wellens. But with 12 minutes to go it was game back on, as seconds after Kieran Dixon was held just short for the Broncos, Mark Percival streaked clear for the away side, allowing Wellens to cross in the corner.

Saints threw everything at the Broncos in the closing moments, but were unable to find a decisive score, Michael Witt booting a penalty and drop-goal in the final two minutes. Earlier he had converted all three tries. Reported by guardian.co.uk 18 hours ago.
