Top News Headlines: Colorado Wildfire Covers 16K Acres

BY NATHAN BYRNE
Two people are reported dead in the Colorado wildfire that has destroyed 350 homes and spread across nearly 16,000 acres.
Firefighters say they’ve had better luck containing the Black Forest fire in the Colorado Springs area as it moved north. According to The Denver Post, 38,000 people have been evacuated.
Meanwhile, Denver’s KUSA reports another wildfire has started on Colorado’s Western Slope. They’re calling it the Beaver Creek fire.
“Lightning sparked it at about 8:00 last night. Right now it’s about five acres, but 15-mile-per-hour winds are causing it to spread. Structures haven’t been threatened, but there are oil and gas rigs in that area.”
U.S. officials say they are now confident Syrian President Bashar al-Assad did in fact use chemical weapons against his own people — and the U.S. is offering military support to Syrian rebels in response.
In August 2012, President Obama said the use or even mobilization of chemical weapons would cross a so-called “red line.” (Via NBC)
U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes told reporters in a conference call that 100 to 150 people had been killed by sarin nerve gas — a weapon banned under international law — and it was the Assad regime, not the rebels, who carried out the attacks. (Via Politico)
A lawsuit’s aiming to overturn the copyright on the “Happy Birthday” song. Right now, Warner/Chappell rakes in about $2 million per year in royalties.

Warner/Chappell says it has the song copyrighted through 2030.
It’s been an exciting back-and-forth series between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. But the Heat’s star power proved to be too much in Game 4 last night.
“LeBron James had a completely focused, businesslike demeanor all night long … leading all scorers with 33 points. Dwayne Wade was right there, as well, dropping in 32 of his own.” (Via HLN)
The Heat won by a final score of 109-93 — tying the series 2-2. Game 5 will be played Sunday in San Antonio. Reported by Newsy 3 hours ago.

Microsoft to Open Windows Stores Inside Best Buy

BY NATHAN BYRNE
Microsoft is taking the retail route to revitalize sales of its flagship operating system.
The largest software company in the world will soon set up shop in 600 Best Buy stores across North America. This — as the newest Windows operating system’s apparent popularity doesn’t appear to be driving hardware sales. (Via KHOG)
“ … Windows 8 has sold more than 100 million copies. But sales of new devices running the new software, including Microsoft Surface tablet — they haven’t been as strong as hoped … ” (Via WNBC)
A writer for Forbes says the move differs from the store-within-a-store concept employed by both Apple and Samsung inside Best Buy locations.
Instead, it “ … represents a complete take-over of the PC department. Windows Stores will effectively replace the computer department at these 600 Best Buy locations.”
And it’ll showcase more than PCs — with tablets, software, phones and Xboxes all in the mix.
The Windows stores will be hard to miss. PC World says they’ll be between 1,500 and 2,200 square feet, “ … on par with the size of the homes into which those PCs will be installed.” (Via PC World)
Microsoft already has something of a retail presence — it owns 70 retail stores, including 30 “pop-up” stores like what you see in malls. The New York Times tech section notes the potential of an impending showdown:
“Microsoft is investing much more heavily in the retail side of the business, where Apple has a distinct advantage with its stores.”
The Wall Street Journal says it’s also an attempt by Best Buy to get on the right side of changing trends in both computing and shopping. The retailer will dedicate more than 1,200 employees to the effort. Reported by Newsy 1 hour ago.

Stanley Cup: Nathan Horton day-to-day, power play struggles for both teams

A shoulder injury he suffered in a fight against Jarome Iginla in the Eastern Conference final has flared up again.
If he doesn’t play, the Bruins could go with Jordan Caron or Jay Pandolfo. Caron has more offensive up-side, Pandolfo more experience.
In the Bruins 2011 Cup run, Horton missed the final with a concussion.
“He’s definitely a big part of our team,” said forward Jay Pandolfo. “But we’ll see. Hopefully he’s fine.”
*DAY OFF HELPED: *The Bruins believe the extra day of rest betweens Games 1 and 2 will help, especially after an epic Game 1 triple overtime.
“Well, it will help both teams,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien. “When you play two games in one night, it’s probably a blessing in disguise that we have two days between because, number one, it’s going to make for a better Game 2.
“I think if anybody who is a hockey fan watched the game, they have to be happy with the showing. It was a hard-fought game. Could have gone either way. That’s what Stanley Cup Final should be all about.
“I even talked about it with our management and staff like that. I said, ‘You know, in reality, it was a great hockey game.’ When you watch the video afterwards, you see the excitement, the chances, everything else. The only thing I would be mad about is the fact we didn’t win. Other than that, this was a great hockey game for people to watch.”
*POWER OUTAGE:* Neither the Bruins nor the Blackhawks have great power plays in the playoffs, continuing a trend that saw the last two Cup winners (Boston, Los Angeles) win the Cup despite power play struggles.
“I don’t know if it’s the power plays that are struggling or the penalty killing has been more effective or efficient,” said Blackhawks coach Joel Quennville. “You look at teams, Boston when they won it, their penalty killing was outstanding. I don’t know the number on L.A. I think special teams are always critical. I think they can make the difference.”
Chicago’s power play is operating at 13 per cent; Boston’s at 16.7.
“If you look at teams sometimes that have great power play percentages in the playoffs, they get them early in the series, early in the playoffs,” said Claude Julien. “But as the playoffs move on, you do so much homework on the other team’s power play. Like for us, we could go back three rounds, looking at Chicago’s power play, and vice versa.
“So you do your homework. Plus, the more you play them, the more you make adjustments as you go on. I think it’s a normal trend, has absolutely nothing to do with the team not being able to score more than the penalty kill doing a great job.”
“To me, I’ve always been one of those proponents, we can say what we want about special teams, yes, they can win you games, decide games once in a while, but more often your five-on-five play is what is going to decide a game. When you play 50 minutes or so five-on-five, that should be more of a determining factor than six minutes on a power play.
*AWARDS NIGHT:* The winners of eight awards — the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, Frank J. Selke Trophy, Jack Adams Award, King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone, NHL Foundation Player Award and NHL General Manager of the Year Award — will be revealed today at 5 p.m.
The winners of the five other NHL awards — the Calder Memorial Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, James Norris Memorial Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and Vezina Trophy — will be announced Saturday during a pre-game show at 7 p.m. Reported by Toronto Star 1 day ago.

Gov. Nathan Deal Appoints Panel to Decide Rep. Tyrone Brooks' Fate

Gov. Nathan Deal appointed a panel on Friday to decide the fate of Rep. Tyrone Brooks, who has been accused of misappropiating nearly $1 million dollars.
Tucker Patch reported that Senate Minority Leader Steve Henson, whose district includes much of Tucker, has been appointed to a panel that will determine whether to suspend state Rep. Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta) from office.
Henson will join another prominent DeKalb Democrat, House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams (D-Atlanta), on the panel, along with Attorney General Sam Olens.
The governor’s executive order calls for the panel to issue a written report with its determination within 14 days. The panel’s ruling is final.
Charges filed against Brooks by the U.S. Attorney’s Office triggered a provision in the state constitution that requires a panel of the state attorney general and a gubernatorial appointment of one House and one Senate member to rule on an indicted legislator’s fitness to serve in office.
If the panel determines that Brooks should stay in office, he’ll continue in his official duties for the remainder of his term in office. If it decides to suspend him, Brooks will continue to receive his legislative pay and benefits but will be unable to act in an official capacity.
A suspension would not call for a special election, and the seat would remain vacant until the next regularly scheduled election. Brooks would resume office if the case against him was adjudicated in his favor.

Scott left stranded on 99 not out
This is South Wales --
GORSEINON'S Scott Rees was agonisingly stranded on 99 not out as his side beat Skewen by 133 runs in the South Wales Junior Cricket League under-16 Zone C encounter.
The visitors posted a season's best total of 200-4, then Glamorgan's Aneurin Donald took 4-12 as Skewen were bowled out for 67. It maintained Gorseinon's unbeaten tag, and another unbeaten team, Llandeilo, head Zone A following a comfortable 57-run win at Llandysul.
Rhydian Thomas cracked 48 and Jack McGready 40 not out as Llandeilo totalled 110-1, then wickets were shared as the hosts were bowled out for 43.
Powerful Neath Golds are the early pacesetters in Zone D and they also remain undefeated after crushing Maesteg Celtic by 99 runs at The Gnoll.
Callum Walters led the run charge with a polished 73 and Matthew Pearce added 53 as Golds posted a formidable 151-5, then Liam Davies ran through the Celtic batting with a devastating career-best 6-12, the visitors back in the pavilion for just 52.
The fine weather encouraged some big scores and there was a titanic battle at Bridgend, who must have thought that their score of 129-4 was a winning one.
Sam Pearce (70no) and Billy Yeates (36) piloted Bridgend's innings but Tata Steel were unfazed as Morgan Jones (44) and Owen Probert (31) spearheaded the winning reply with five wickets and one over to spare.
A superb unbeaten 77 from Tom Davies and 48 from Tom Blake enabled Ynystawe to successfully chase down Aberdare's 138-4, the winning margin nine wickets. For the home side, Ben Sidney-Jones blasted a brilliant 82 and Nathan Spain 34.
